Energy security refers to the uninterrupted availability of energy sources at an affordable price. The global landscape of energy security has shifted over time, influenced by economic, political, and environmental factors.
Historical shifts in energy security
- Era of security (1985-2003) - Following the energy crisis of 1973 and the Iraq War (1990-91), this period was marked by relatively low oil prices and a sense of stability in energy supply.
- Era of insecurity (2004 onwards) - Since 2004, energy insecurity has grown due to various challenges impacting the reliability and affordability of energy supplies.
Causes of increasing energy insecurity
- Rising demand - Increased energy needs, particularly from newly industrialising countries (NICs), have put pressure on global supplies.
- Depleting reserves - Non-renewable resources are being consumed faster than they can be replenished, leading to reduced availability.
- Geopolitical tensions - Conflicts, such as those between Russia and Ukraine, disrupt energy supply chains and create uncertainty.
- Environmental concerns - Growing awareness of global warming and the impact of natural disasters has highlighted the need for sustainable energy practices.
- Terrorist activities - Instabilities in regions like Syria have affected energy production and distribution, adding to insecurity.
Importance of a diversified energy mix
Relying on a single energy source or supplier increases the risk of insecurity. A diversified energy mix, incorporating various sources and suppliers, provides greater stability and reduces vulnerability to supply disruptions.
Differences between renewable and non-renewable energy resources
Energy resources are broadly classified into two categories based on their sustainability and availability over time.
Non-renewable energy resources
Non-renewable resources are finite and cannot be replenished on a human timescale once depleted. Examples include fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas, which dominate global energy supply, as well as nuclear power, which relies on uranium, a limited resource. Continued reliance on these resources leads to depletion of reserves, contributing to energy insecurity and environmental challenges.
Renewable energy resources
Renewable resources can be replenished naturally over time and are considered sustainable as they do not deplete natural capital. Examples include solar power, wind energy, hydroelectric schemes, and tidal energy, which can be harnessed on both large and small scales, from community projects to individual households. These sources offer a long-term solution to energy needs without exhausting natural resources, supporting environmental sustainability.
Role of renewables and alternative energy sources
As concerns over climate change and resource depletion grow, renewable and alternative energy sources are becoming increasingly significant in the global energy mix. These options often produce fewer emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels.
Growth of renewable energy sources

- Growth in low-income countries (LICs) - Energy use in LICs is increasing at a faster rate than in HICs, though their overall consumption remains significantly lower.
Continued reliance on fossil fuels
Despite advances in renewable energy, fossil fuels remain the primary global energy source.
Reasons for continued dominance of fossil fuels:
- Availability of existing reserves.
- Established infrastructure for extraction and distribution.
- Economic importance, as energy companies often contribute significantly to government revenues.
Moving away from fossil fuels is complex due to entrenched systems and economic dependencies, even as renewable alternatives gain traction.
