3.14 - Sustainable Development Goals
The purpose and background of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent a global framework established to address pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges. Introduced in 2015, these 17 goals replaced the earlier Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which were in place from 2000 to 2015. The SDGs are set to guide international efforts until 2030.
The key aims of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals
The SDGs encompass a comprehensive set of objectives aimed at improving lives and protecting the planet. Each goal targets a specific area of concern, with the overarching mission of fostering sustainable development across the globe.
Objectives of the SDGs

Significant global challenges addressed by the SDGs
The SDGs are designed to tackle some of the most critical issues facing humanity today. These challenges highlight the urgency of coordinated global action to improve living conditions and safeguard the environment.
Poverty and basic needs
- Extreme poverty (Goal 1) - In 2015, approximately 10% of the global population lived on less than $1.90 a day, underscoring the need to eradicate poverty.
- Hunger and malnutrition (Goal 2) - More than 800 million people worldwide lack access to adequate food, making sustainable agriculture and food security a priority.
- Water scarcity (Goal 6) - Water shortages affect 40% of the world's population, a problem expected to worsen.
- Energy access (Goal 7) - In 2012, over 1 billion people lacked access to electricity, necessitating a shift towards affordable and renewable energy solutions.
Health and education
- Health crises (Goal 3) - Between 2000 and 2015, there were 200 million cases of malaria, highlighting the need to combat infectious diseases and improve health systems.
- Educational disparities (Goal 4) - In 2013, around 60 million primary school children were out of school, predominantly from the poorest households.
- Gender barriers (Goal 5) - In regions like Sub-Saharan Africa and Western Asia, girls face barriers to entering primary and secondary school.
Economic and social issues
- Unemployment and exploitation (Goal 8) - With more than 200 million people unemployed globally, and a need for 470 million new jobs by 2030, decent work and economic growth are critical.
- Infrastructure deficits (Goal 9) - Basic services like roads, sanitation, and electricity remain scarce in many low-income countries (LICs).
- Inequality gaps (Goal 10) - Many households in LICs live in increasingly unequal societies compared to the 1990s, across wealth, gender, and other dimensions.
- Urban challenges (Goal 11) - Nearly one billion people reside in slums, with numbers growing, necessitating sustainable urban development.
Environmental challenges
- Resource overconsumption (Goal 12) - By 2050, the equivalent of three planet Earths will be needed to provide the natural resources to sustain current lifestyles, pushing for a circular economy.
- Climate change (Goal 13) - Global temperatures are projected to rise by 1.5°C by 2100 compared to the 1850–1900 average, demanding urgent action.
- Marine degradation (Goal 14) - Up to 40% of the world's oceans are affected by pollution and overfishing, threatening marine ecosystems.
- Land and biodiversity loss (Goal 15) - Around 1.6 billion people rely on forests for their livelihood, including 70 million indigenous people, highlighting the need for conservation.
Governance and technology
- Conflict and injustice (Goal 16) - The rate of children leaving primary school in conflict affected areas is around 50% (some 28.5 million children).
- Digital divide (Goal 17) - More than 4 billion people, 90% of whom are from LICs, do not use the internet, limiting access to technology and information.
The importance of partnerships and implementation for achieving the SDGs
Achieving the ambitious targets of the SDGs requires robust collaboration and effective strategies for implementation. Goal 17 specifically focuses on fostering partnerships to ensure the necessary resources and technologies are available to support global development efforts.
