They support a vast array of life, with around 1 million species of plants and animals, including approximately 4,000 species of fish and 800 species of reef-building corals. Many of these reefs, though some date back millions of years, are generally less than 10,000 years old. About 25% of the world's marine fish rely on coral reefs for breeding, growth, spawning, and shelter from predators. Iconic examples include the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and numerous reefs across the Philippines and Indonesia.
