Types of water scarcity affecting low-income countries
Water scarcity is a significant challenge, particularly in low-income countries (LICs), where inadequate water supplies can severely impact daily life and development. Two main types of scarcity are prevalent in these regions.
Categories of water scarcity in LICs
- Physical water scarcity - This occurs when water consumption exceeds 60% of the usable supply. Countries facing this issue often resort to importing food to reduce local water use and invest in technologies like desalination plants.
- Economic water scarcity - This happens when a country has sufficient water resources physically available but lacks the necessary infrastructure for storage and transport. Addressing this requires large-scale water development projects, which can be a challenge for many LICs, particularly in regions like sub-Saharan Africa.
Additional challenges in accessing water
In LICs, access to adequate water supplies is further complicated by the exhaustion of traditional sources. Wells and seasonal rivers, which many communities rely on, often run dry.
The impact and definition of drought
Drought is an extended period of dry weather leading to conditions of extreme dryness. It can have widespread consequences for agriculture, health, and the environment.
Defining drought conditions
- Absolute drought - Characterised by at least 15 consecutive days with rainfall less than 0.2 mm.
- Partial drought - Defined as at least 29 consecutive days where the average daily rainfall does not exceed 0.2 mm.
Consequences of drought
- Agricultural impacts - Reduced crop yields due to insufficient water.
- Livestock losses - Increased animal mortality as water sources diminish.
- Human health issues - Rise in illnesses related to dehydration.
- Environmental risks - Higher incidence of forest fires.
- Water use restrictions - Implementation of measures like hosepipe bans and prohibitions on watering gardens or washing cars.
Global distribution of water quantity and quality
The availability of freshwater varies greatly across the world, influenced by seasonal patterns and geographical factors.
Uneven distribution of freshwater
- Rainfall disparity - Approximately three-quarters of the world's annual rainfall falls in areas that house less than a third of the global population.
- Population and rainfall mismatch - Two-thirds of the world's population reside in areas that receive only a quarter of the annual rainfall.
Factors affecting water quality and access to safe drinking water
Water quality is as critical as quantity, especially in developing countries where many lack access to safe and affordable water supplies.
Health impacts of poor water quality
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around 4 million deaths each year are linked to water-related diseases. Common illnesses include cholera, hepatitis, malaria, and various parasitic diseases.
Sources of water contamination
- Organic waste - Sewage discharge introduces pathogens into water supplies.
- Agricultural runoff - Fertilisers and pesticides used in farming can contaminate water sources.
- Industrial pollutants - Heavy metals and acids from industrial processes and transport activities can pollute water.
Barriers to accessing safe drinking water
- Water availability - In many areas, there is simply not enough clean water to meet needs.
- Infrastructure limitations - Lack of proper systems for water storage, treatment, and distribution.
- Cost of water - Economic constraints can make clean water unaffordable for many households in LICs.
