Introduction to motor skills
In Physical Education, learning movement skills and performing them effectively is essential for success in sports and activities. A key concept is the motor skill, which forms the foundation for understanding how movements are executed.
A motor skill is a learned ability to produce a specific movement or sequence of movements to achieve an intended result. This means that motor skills are developed through practice, enabling athletes to perform actions reliably in various contexts.
Characteristics of skilful movements
Skilful movements are those that demonstrate high levels of control and effectiveness. They make complex actions appear effortless, in contrast to less skilled performers who may seem awkward or uncoordinated. Understanding these characteristics helps in recognising and developing expertise in sports.
Key features of skilful movements
- Efficiency - The movement uses the least amount of energy and time possible to achieve the goal, avoiding unnecessary effort.
- Pre-determined - There is a clear objective in mind before starting the movement, so the performer knows exactly what result they aim to produce.
- Coordinated - Different body parts work together smoothly to maximise the effect, such as arms and legs synchronising in a throw.
- Fluent - The movement flows confidently from one phase to the next without hesitation or disruption.
- Aesthetic - The movement is controlled and visually pleasing, which is particularly important in judged sports like gymnastics or figure skating, where appearance contributes to scoring.
These characteristics ensure that skilled performers can execute techniques reliably, making their actions look easy and natural.
Classification of skills on continuums
Skills in sports are not strictly one type or another but can be classified along continuums, which are scales with extremes at each end. This approach recognises that most skills exist somewhere in between categories, depending on the context. Two main continuums are used: the environmental continuum for open and closed skills, and the difficulty continuum for simple and complex skills.
Open and closed skills on the environmental continuum
The environmental continuum classifies skills based on how much the surroundings affect the performance. At one end are skills performed in stable conditions, while at the other are those requiring constant adaptation.
Open skills
Open skills are performed in unpredictable or changing environments, where the performer must react and adapt to external factors like opponents, weather, or crowd noise. This requires quick decision-making and flexibility.
An example of an open skill is returning a shot during a tennis rally, where the player must adapt to the opponent's shot speed, direction, and spin, making the environment variable and requiring on-the-spot adjustments.
Closed skills
Closed skills occur in predictable, stable environments that do not change, so the performer can plan and execute the movement without needing to adapt to external influences.
An example of a closed skill is shooting a free throw in basketball, where the conditions (distance, hoop height, and lack of defenders) remain consistent each time, allowing the performer to focus on a repeatable technique.
Simple and complex skills on the difficulty continuum
The difficulty continuum categorises skills according to the level of concentration and information processing required. Simple skills are straightforward, while complex ones involve more mental and physical demands.
Simple skills
Simple skills require minimal concentration and little information processing, often involving basic movements that can be performed with little thought once learned.
An example of a simple skill is jogging at a steady pace, which involves basic rhythm and minimal decision-making, allowing the performer to maintain the action without much mental effort.
Complex skills
Complex skills demand high levels of concentration and extensive information processing, typically combining multiple elements or requiring precise timing and coordination.
An example of a complex skill is executing a full routine in gymnastics, which combines multiple techniques like flips, balances, and transitions, requiring intense focus and processing of body position, timing, and spatial awareness.
