The role of joints in the skeletal system
The skeletal system provides structure, support, and protection for the body, and joints play a key part in enabling movement. A joint is the point where two or more bones meet. Joints allow the skeleton to be flexible, making it possible for us to perform everyday actions and sports activities.
Types of joint movements
Joint movements describe the different ways bones can move at a joint. There are eight main types of joint movements, each with specific examples.
The eight main joint movements
- Flexion - This involves closing or bending a joint, reducing the angle between bones. For example, bending the arm at the elbow when lifting a weight.
- Extension - This is the opposite of flexion, involving opening or straightening a joint to increase the angle between bones. For instance, straightening the leg at the knee when kicking a football.
- Adduction - This movement brings a limb towards an imaginary centre line running down the middle of the body. An example is moving the legs together from a wide stance.
- Abduction - This is the opposite of adduction, moving a limb away from the body's centre line. For example, raising the arms outward from the sides.
- Rotation - This involves a twisting motion, either clockwise or anticlockwise, around a joint. An example is turning the head from side to side.
- Circumduction - This is a circular movement of a limb, hand, or foot, combining flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction. For instance, moving the arm in a full circle.
- Plantar-flexion - This is a specific extension at the ankle joint, pointing the toes downward. An example is standing on tiptoes.
- Dorsi-flexion - This is flexion at the ankle, lifting the front of the foot towards the shin. For example, lifting the toes upward when walking uphill.
Main types of joints and their functions
Joints are classified by their structure and the movements they allow. There are four main types relevant to physical education, each suited to different body parts and activities. The atlas and axis are the top two vertebrae in the spine, forming a specialised joint that enables head rotation.
The four main types of joints
- Ball and socket joints - These have a rounded bone end fitting into a cup-shaped socket, allowing a wide range of motion.
- Hinge joints - These work like a door hinge, permitting movement in one plane only.
- Condyloid joints - These feature an oval-shaped bone end in a shallow cavity, enabling varied but not full rotational movement.
- Pivot joints - These allow one bone to rotate around another, like a wheel on an axle.
Connective tissues in the skeletal system
Connective tissues support joints by linking bones, muscles, and other structures. There are three main types of connective tissues in the skeletal system.
The three main types of connective tissues
- Cartilage - This is a firm but flexible tissue that acts as a cushion between bones at joints. It absorbs shock and reduces friction during movement, preventing bone damage.
- Ligaments - These are tough, fibrous bands that hold bones together at joints. They maintain skeletal stability during movement and prevent excessive motion that could cause dislocations. Ligaments are made of strong, inelastic tissue.
- Tendons - These attach muscles to bones (or sometimes to other muscles), enabling bones to move when muscles contract.
