Introduction to injuries in sport
Injuries are common in physical activities, especially in sports involving contact, speed, or repetitive movements. They can affect various parts of the body, including soft tissues and bones. Soft tissues refer to parts of the body that are not bone, such as skin, muscles, tendons (which connect muscles to bones), and ligaments (which connect bones to other bones). Understanding these injuries helps athletes prevent them and respond appropriately when they occur.
Soft tissue injuries
Soft tissue injuries involve damage to skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments, or cartilage. These often happen during sports due to sudden movements, impacts, or overuse. They can cause pain, swelling, and limited movement, and it's important to recognise them early to avoid further damage.
Injuries to the skin
Skin injuries are frequent in many sports, particularly those with contact or friction.
Types of skin injuries:
- Abrasions - These are scrapes or grazes where the skin is rubbed or scraped, often breaking the surface and causing bleeding. Examples include grazes from falls, blisters from repeated friction (like in running), and chafing from equipment rubbing against the skin.
- Cuts - These are deeper breaks in the skin that cause bleeding. Shallow cuts might heal quickly, but deep cuts can damage underlying tissues and require medical attention, such as stitches.
Skin injuries are especially common in full-contact sports like wrestling or martial arts, where impacts and falls increase the risk.
Muscle and tendon injuries
Muscles and tendons can tear when overstretched or overused, leading to strains.
Types of muscle and tendon injuries:
- Strains - These are tears in muscles or tendons, often called "pulled" muscles. They usually result from sudden overstretching, such as during bursts of speed. Common examples include pulled thigh muscles (quadriceps or hamstrings) or calf muscles in sports like soccer and running.
- Overuse tendon injuries - Continuous stress over time can cause inflammation in tendons. Tennis elbow is painful inflammation of tendons in the elbow from overuse of arm muscles, often in racket sports. Golfer's elbow is a similar condition affecting the inner elbow. These occur when athletes train too intensely without enough rest.
Ligament and cartilage injuries
Ligaments and cartilage provide stability and cushioning in joints, but they can be damaged by twisting or impact.
Types of ligament and cartilage injuries:
- Sprains - These are stretches or tears in ligaments around a joint, typically caused by violent twisting or sudden changes in direction. They are common in sports like basketball and volleyball, where quick pivots are frequent.
- Cartilage tears - Cartilage is the tough, flexible tissue that cushions joints. It can tear from sudden impacts or twisting motions, such as in the knee during sports involving jumps or tackles.
These injuries often lead to swelling and instability in the joint, making further activity difficult.
Bone and joint injuries
Bones and joints can suffer breaks or displacements from sudden forces or prolonged stress. These injuries are serious because they affect the body's structure and can involve damage to surrounding tissues.
Fractures
A fracture is a break or crack in a bone, often accompanied by bruising, swelling, and pain due to damaged blood vessels and nerves in or around the bone. Most fractures (except stress types) result from sudden impacts, while stress fractures come from repeated stress.
Types of fractures:
- Simple fracture - The bone breaks but stays under the skin, with no open wound.
- Compound fracture - The bone breaks through the skin, creating an open wound and increasing infection risk.
- Stress fracture - A small crack in the bone from continuous overuse, common in activities like long-distance running.
- Greenstick fracture - Occurs in young or soft bones that bend and partially break, rather than snapping completely.
Fractures require immediate medical attention, often involving immobilisation to allow healing.
Dislocations
A dislocation happens when a bone is forced out of its normal position in a joint, usually from twisting or impact. This damages surrounding ligaments, muscles, and tendons, causing severe pain and swelling. Common in contact sports, dislocations need professional realignment to prevent long-term joint issues.
Concussion as a head injury
Concussion is a mild brain injury caused by a blow to the head, which shakes the brain inside the skull. It disrupts normal brain function temporarily and is common in sports like rugby or boxing.
Symptoms of concussion
- Disorientation (feeling confused or dizzy)
- Memory loss (trouble recalling events)
- Possible loss of consciousness
If the person is unconscious, check for neck or spine injuries before moving them. Place them in the recovery position, where the head is tilted back to keep the airway clear and prevent blockage by the tongue or vomit, then call an ambulance. For conscious individuals, monitor them for at least 48 hours to watch for worsening symptoms. Never move someone with suspected neck or spine injuries, as this could cause permanent damage.
Treatment methods for sports injuries
Proper treatment can reduce pain, swelling, and recovery time for many injuries. The approach depends on the injury type, but immediate actions are crucial.
The RICE method
The RICE method is a standard first-aid approach for soft tissue injuries like strains, sprains, and some fractures. It helps minimise internal bleeding, swelling, and bruising.
Steps in the RICE method:
- Rest - Stop activity immediately and rest the injured area to prevent further damage.
- Ice - Apply ice (wrapped in cloth to avoid skin damage) to contract blood vessels, reducing bleeding and swelling.
- Compression - Use a bandage to apply gentle pressure, which limits swelling; avoid making it too tight to maintain blood flow.
- Elevation - Raise the injured limb above heart level to drain excess fluid and reduce swelling.
This method is effective for muscle, tendon, ligament, and joint injuries but should be followed by professional medical advice if symptoms persist. For severe cases like compound fractures or dislocations, seek emergency help rather than self-treating.
