What is guidance in skill acquisition
Guidance refers to the help and instruction provided to learners to assist them in understanding and performing movement patterns, skills, and techniques. This support is essential for acquiring new abilities in physical activities. There are four main types of guidance: visual, verbal, manual, and mechanical. Manual and mechanical guidance are often grouped together because both involve physical support to aid the learner during practice.
Visual guidance
Visual guidance involves learning through observation, such as watching demonstrations, images, or videos. This method allows learners to see the correct technique in action, which helps them form a mental picture of how to perform the skill.
Advantages of visual guidance
- Accurate demonstrations - Learners can observe precise performances and create mental images of the correct technique.
- Repeatability - Demonstrations can be shown multiple times, allowing learners to review as needed.
- Slow-motion focus - Videos or replays in slow motion help highlight specific parts of a skill.
- Versatility across stages - This type of guidance works well in all phases of learning.
Disadvantages of visual guidance
- Need for expertise - It requires high-quality, accurate demonstrations from skilled performers; poor examples can lead to incorrect learning.
- Limited effectiveness - If the visual materials are of low quality or unclear, they may not help and could confuse the learner.
Verbal guidance
Verbal guidance uses spoken or written words to explain movements, techniques, or strategies. This can include instructions from a coach or teacher, helping learners understand what to do and why.
Advantages of verbal guidance
- Immediate feedback - Instructions can be given on the spot, allowing learners to apply them quickly during practice.
- Assessment opportunities - Coaches can use questions to check understanding.
- Complementary use - It works well alongside visual guidance, providing explanations that enhance what is seen.
Disadvantages of verbal guidance

- Limitations for novices - Too much verbal detail at once can confuse those new to a skill.

Manual and mechanical guidance
Manual guidance provides hands-on physical assistance from a coach or teacher, such as supporting a learner's body during a movement. Mechanical guidance uses equipment like harnesses, flotation aids, or stabilisers to offer physical support. Both types help learners experience the correct feel of a movement safely.
Advantages of manual and mechanical guidance
- Support for beginners - They are particularly helpful in the early stages of learning.
- Building muscle memory - These methods help develop the physical sensations needed for movements, creating lasting patterns through repetition.
- Safety in risky activities - They provide a secure environment for hazardous or complex skills.

Disadvantages of manual and mechanical guidance

Matching guidance to learning stages
Guidance should be tailored to the learner's stage of skill acquisition to maximise effectiveness. The learning process typically includes the cognitive stage (where beginners focus on understanding basics), the associative stage (practising and refining), and the autonomous stage (performing automatically).
Key considerations for each type:
- Visual guidance - This is effective at all stages but especially in the cognitive stage, where seeing the skill helps form initial understanding.
- Verbal guidance - Keep it simple and limited for beginners in the cognitive stage to avoid overload; use more detailed explanations for advanced learners in later stages.
- Manual and mechanical guidance - These are most crucial during the cognitive stage for building basic feel and safety, and they are valuable for complex or hazardous movements at any stage.
By matching guidance types to the learner's needs, coaches can help develop muscle memory through repeated physical sensations.
