What muscles are and their importance
Muscles form a key part of the body's movement system. They are bands of fibrous tissue that can contract, which means they shorten to create force. This contraction produces movement at joints, allowing the body to perform actions.
Every movement in the body relies on muscles. They work by pulling on bones to change the position of body parts. Without muscles, all aspects of daily living would be extremely difficult or impossible.
Types of muscles
- Voluntary muscles - These are under conscious control, meaning you can choose when to use them. They move bones.
- Involuntary muscles - These operate without conscious thought, such as those in the heart or digestive system.
Main voluntary muscles and their actions
Voluntary muscles are attached to bones and work in pairs or groups to create smooth movements.
Key voluntary muscles and their primary actions
- Trapezius - Located in the upper back and neck, this muscle holds the shoulders in place, rotates them, and moves the head backwards or sideways.
- Deltoids - Found in the shoulders, these muscles raise the arms forwards, backwards, or sideways at the shoulder joint.
- Pectorals - Situated in the chest, they pull the arms across the body through adduction.
- Biceps - Positioned on the front of the upper arm, they bend the arm at the elbow joint.
- Triceps - Located on the back of the upper arm, these straighten the arm at the elbow.
- Latissimus dorsi (often shortened to 'lats') - These broad muscles in the middle back pull the arms down at the shoulder and draw them behind the back.
- Abdominals - In the stomach area, they flex the spine to bend the body forwards and help pull in the abdomen.
- Hip flexors - Found at the front of the hip, they lift the leg and knee upwards.
- Gluteals - These are in the buttocks, with the gluteus maximus being the largest. They pull the leg back at the hip and raise it sideways.
- Quadriceps (often called 'quads') - On the front of the thigh, they straighten the leg at the knee and keep it straight for standing.
- Hamstrings - At the back of the thigh, they bend the leg at the knee.
- Gastrocnemius - The largest muscle in the calf, it plantarflexes the ankle joint (points the foot downwards), allowing you to stand on tiptoes.
- Tibialis anterior - Located on the front of the lower leg, it pulls the foot upwards towards the shin through dorsiflexion.
The roles of ligaments and tendons
Muscles do not work alone; they connect to bones through other tissues that provide support and enable movement.
Ligaments
Ligaments are strong, elastic tissues that connect bones to each other at joints. Their main role is to provide stability by holding bones together.
Tendons
Tendons are tough bands of fibrous tissue that attach muscles to bones. They act as anchors, transmitting the force from muscle contractions to the bones, which results in movement. Tendons are very strong with limited elasticity, withstanding tension when muscles contract.
A well-known example is the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone.
