What is arousal?
Arousal refers to a state of heightened mental excitement and alertness, where you feel energised and ready to tackle a task. This readiness combines both physical and psychological elements, motivating you to perform effectively in sports or activities. Achieving the right level of arousal is crucial because too much can lead to stress and errors, while too little can result in lack of focus and poor results.
Physical symptoms of arousal
When arousal increases, your body experiences various physical changes that signal readiness for performance.
Common physical symptoms
- Dry mouth
- Increased breathing
- Increased heart rate
- Nausea
- Sweaty palms
- Tremor
These symptoms are a normal part of the arousal process, but if they become overwhelming, they can shift from helpful to harmful, leading to decreased performance.
The inverted-U theory
The inverted-U theory, also known as the Yerkes-Dodson law, explains how arousal levels affect performance. This theory suggests that performance improves as arousal increases up to an optimal point, after which it declines. The relationship forms an upside-down 'U' shape when plotted on a graph, with arousal on the horizontal axis and performance on the vertical axis.
At low arousal, you might feel unmotivated or unfocused, leading to mistakes. As arousal rises, performance gets better because you're more alert and energised. However, beyond the optimal point, high arousal causes anxiety, which impairs concentration and coordination. This theory highlights that there's no one-size-fits-all level—optimal arousal varies based on individual and situational factors.
Key areas of the inverted-U curve
- Low arousal - Performance is poor due to lack of motivation or readiness; you're not sufficiently stimulated to give your best.
- Optimal arousal - Often called being 'in the zone', this is where performance peaks; you feel focused, confident, and capable.
- High arousal - Performance drops because of excessive stress or nervousness, leading to errors or panic.
Factors influencing optimal arousal
The ideal level of arousal isn't the same for everyone or every situation. It depends on several elements that interact to determine how much excitement helps or hinders performance.

- Nature of the task - Tasks with high pressure or complexity might require moderate arousal to maintain control, while simpler ones can benefit from higher levels.
- Skill of the performer - More experienced athletes often handle higher arousal better, using it to enhance their expertise, whereas beginners might need lower levels to avoid overwhelm.
- Personality of the performer - Extroverted individuals may thrive with higher arousal due to their outgoing nature, while introverts might perform best at lower levels to stay composed.

Characteristics of under-arousal and over-arousal
Balancing arousal is key to success, but imbalances can lead to specific issues that affect performance. Under-arousal happens when excitement is too low, while over-arousal occurs when it's excessively high. Both states prevent you from reaching your potential, but they manifest in different ways.
Under-arousal
You lack the necessary focus or energy, resulting in sluggish reactions and incomplete effort. This can cause underperformance, such as missing easy opportunities or failing to push through challenges.
Over-arousal
Feelings of anxiety, nervousness, or stress dominate, making it hard to concentrate. You might get 'psyched out' by opponents, leading to mistakes, hesitation, or not delivering your full capabilities.
Arousal levels for different skills
Different types of skills require varying arousal levels for best results. Fine motor skills, which demand precision and control, generally need lower arousal to maintain accuracy. In contrast, gross motor skills, involving power and large movements, often perform better with higher arousal to generate force and speed.
This difference arises because high arousal can disrupt delicate coordination but enhance explosive actions. Athletes must tailor their arousal based on the skill type to optimise performance.
