Understanding somatotypes
Somatotypes refer to the basic shapes and builds of the human body, which can influence how well someone performs in certain sports. These body types are not fixed categories that everyone fits perfectly into, but they help explain why some physical builds give advantages in particular activities.
Somatotypes are often visualised on a triangular graph, where the three corners represent the extreme versions of each type. Most people fall somewhere in the middle of this graph as a combination of the types, rather than being a pure example of just one.
The three main somatotypes
There are three primary somatotypes: endomorph, mesomorph, and ectomorph. Each has distinct physical features that can make certain sports easier or more challenging.
Endomorph characteristics
Endomorphs tend to have a body build that stores more fat and has a rounded shape.
Key features of endomorphs:
- Wider hips compared to shoulders
- Tendency for higher body fat storage, distributed across the torso and limbs
Mesomorph characteristics
Mesomorphs have a naturally athletic build that responds well to training, making it easier to develop muscle.

Ectomorph characteristics
Ectomorphs are typically slender with less natural muscle or fat, which can make gaining weight or bulk challenging.

- A linear and slender body shape, with narrow shoulders, hips, and chest
- Characteristically low levels of both muscle mass and body fat
- Possess long and thin limbs
Mixtures of somatotypes
Very few individuals are a perfect match for just one somatotype; most people show a blend of characteristics from all three. This mixture can be plotted on a triangular graph, with pure types at the corners and combinations towards the centre.
Suitability of somatotypes for different sports
Different somatotypes provide natural advantages in specific sports due to how their body shapes affect performance factors like power, speed, and stability. Choosing a sport that matches your somatotype can improve success, but training can help overcome some limitations.
Sports suited to endomorphs
Endomorphs benefit from their higher body mass and lower centre of mass, which provides stability and resistance against being moved.
Examples of sports suited to endomorphs:
- Wrestling and sumo - Their significant body mass and stability make it challenging for opponents to displace them
- Shot-put - The advantage of greater body mass assists in generating powerful throws

Mesomorphs excel in a wide range of activities because their build supports quick muscle development and upper-body strength, aiding in power-based movements.

Sports suited to ectomorphs
Ectomorphs thrive in endurance or height-dependent sports where low weight and long limbs reduce the energy needed for movement.
Examples of sports suited to ectomorphs:
- High jump - Their low body mass is advantageous for clearing the bar, and extended limbs can reduce the vertical distance the centre of mass must ascend
