What a skill is in physical education
In physical education, the term skill refers to specific actions that people perform in sports and activities.
A skill is a learnt action designed to achieve a desired outcome with maximum certainty and minimum effort. This means skills are not innate but developed through practice and experience.
For example, in netball, shooting is a skill because it involves a learnt technique to score goals reliably with controlled effort.
The role of ability in learning skills
While skills are learnt, the ease with which someone acquires them depends on their inherent traits. These traits form the foundation for skill development and vary between individuals.
Ability is a set of inherited or natural traits that influence a person's potential to learn and master a skill. Abilities provide the building blocks for skills but do not guarantee success without practice.
In netball shooting, abilities like composure (staying calm under pressure) and balance (maintaining stability) help a player learn and perform the skill more effectively.
Basic versus complex skills
Skills can be classified based on their complexity, which affects how they are learnt and performed.
Characteristics of basic and complex skills
- Basic skills - These are simple actions that require minimal thought or decision-making, making them quick to learn; for example, running involves straightforward movements without much complexity
- Complex skills - These demand high levels of coordination, concentration, and decision-making, often taking longer to master; for example, an overhead kick in football requires precise timing and body control
Open versus closed skills
Another way to classify skills is by how much the environment influences their execution.
Characteristics of open and closed skills
- Open skills - These occur in unpredictable environments where performers must react to changing factors, such as opponents or weather; for example, tackling in football requires adapting to the positions of other players
- Closed skills - These are performed in stable, predictable settings with consistent conditions each time; for example, breaking off in snooker involves the same setup and action repeatedly
Self-paced versus externally-paced skills
The pacing of a skill refers to who or what controls its timing and speed.
Characteristics of self-paced and externally-paced skills
- Self-paced skills - The performer decides when to start and at what speed to execute the action, allowing full control; for example, a golfer chooses the timing of their swing
- Externally-paced skills - External factors, such as opponents or environmental cues, dictate the start time and pace; for example, in football, an opponent's movement might force a quick pass
Gross versus fine skills
Skills can also be categorised by the muscle groups involved and the precision required.
Characteristics of gross and fine skills
- Gross skills - These use large muscle groups for powerful, broad movements; for example, the long jump involves explosive actions from leg and core muscles
- Fine skills - These rely on small muscle groups for accurate, delicate movements; for example, throwing a dart requires precise hand and finger control
Using continua to classify skills
Not all skills fit neatly into one category, so they can be placed on a continuum (a sliding scale) to show where they lie between two extremes. This approach provides a more nuanced way to analyse skills in different contexts.
How continua work
- Scale representation - A continuum is a line with opposing categories at each end, and skills are positioned along it based on their characteristics
- Flexibility in classification - This shows that skills can have varying degrees of a trait, rather than being strictly one type or another
- Application to multiple classifications - Continua can be used for any of the skill pairs, such as basic to complex or gross to fine
Skills can be arranged from closed (predictable environment) to open (changing environment):
- Archery (target practice, highly controlled)
- Bowling a cricket ball (in practice, largely consistent conditions)
- High jump (some variability, but controlled setup)
- Receiving a pass in basketball (requires adaptation to ball path/speed)
- Football tackle (highly open, reacts to multiple factors)
