The definition and components of landscapes
Landscapes encompass all the visible features across a specific area of land. These features can be broadly divided into natural elements and human-made elements.
When an area predominantly showcases physical features, such as mountains or forest, it is termed a natural landscape. Conversely, when human influence is more evident through buildings and urban development, like a town or city, it is referred to as a built landscape.
The classification of UK landscapes into upland, lowland, and glaciated types
The United Kingdom's diverse terrain is categorised into three primary types of natural landscapes: upland, lowland, and glaciated. Each type is distinguished by unique geological formations, climatic conditions, and patterns of land use, which contribute to their distinct characteristics.

- Upland landscapes - Typically located in the northern and western regions, characterised by rugged terrain and resistant rock formations.
