The definition and components of an ecosystem
An ecosystem is a unit that includes all the living and non-living elements within a specific area.
Key elements of an ecosystem
- Biotic components - These are the living parts, including plants and animals.
- Abiotic components - These are the non-living parts, such as soil and climate.
Example of a small-scale ecosystem
A pond serves as an example of a small-scale ecosystem. It includes aquatic plants, organisms that live in it and feed on it, the sediment in the area, and the rainfall and sunshine it receives. Producers include algae and duckweed, while consumers include dragonfly larvae, water beetles, small fish, frogs, and herons.
The roles of producers, consumers, and decomposers
Within ecosystems, organisms are categorised based on how they obtain energy and nutrients.
Categories of organisms in ecosystems
- Producers - These organisms use sunlight energy to produce food. Examples include plants.
- Consumers - These organisms gain energy by eating other organisms. They eat producers or other consumers.
- Decomposers - These organisms derive energy by breaking down dead material, such as dead producers, dead consumers, or fallen leaves. Key examples are bacteria and fungi.
Food chains and food webs in ecosystems
Energy transfer within ecosystems is illustrated through specific structures that show feeding relationships among organisms.

- Food web - Shows lots of food chains and how they overlap.

- Role of decomposers - Decomposers return nutrients to the soil.
- Nutrient availability - These recycled nutrients can then be used by plants.

Ecosystems are built on interdependence, where each component relies on others for survival.

- Reliance on producers - Consumers depend on producers for a source of food. Some organisms depend on them for a habitat (a place to live).
- Impact of changes - If one part changes, it affects all the other parts that depend on it.
Examples of ecosystem chain reactions
- Drought - Reduced plant growth → Fewer seeds and fruits for animals in winter → Numbers of rodents and small birds fall → Fewer prey for predatory birds to hunt, so number of predatory birds falls.
- Woodland cleared - Fewer habitats for beetles, caterpillars and worms, so numbers fall → Small mammals and birds have less to eat, so numbers fall → Fewer prey for predators to hunt, so number of predators falls.
