- Major concentrations - Significant reef systems are located in the Caribbean Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean, with notable clusters in South East Asia and Oceania.
- Specific examples - Prominent reefs include the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef in Central America, the Red Sea Coral Reef, and the New Caledonia Barrier Reef.

- Water clarity - Clear water is vital as sediment can obstruct coral feeding and even cause mortality. This explains the absence of reefs near river mouths where sediment levels are high.

Coral reefs often exist in environments with low nutrient levels, making nutrient cycling a critical process for their survival.
