The definition and characteristics of the UK's climate
Climate refers to the long-term average of weather conditions, measured over a span of 30 years. This is distinct from weather, which describes the short-term, day-to-day state of the atmosphere, including factors like temperature, humidity, and wind speed. The UK experiences a maritime climate, shaped by its location and the prevailing winds that blow from the south-west across the Atlantic Ocean, bringing high rainfall and moderate temperatures year-round.
Key features of the UK's maritime climate
Rainfall distribution:
- The western uplands receive a significant amount of rainfall due to moist air from the Atlantic being forced upwards, cooling and forming rain-bearing clouds.
- This is known as relief rainfall.
- In contrast, the lowlands in the south and east are drier, often lying in the rain shadow of the uplands.
Temperature variations:
- Temperatures are generally lower in the uplands compared to the lowlands.
- In winter, frost and snow are common in higher areas.
- On average, temperature decreases by 0.6°C for every 100 metres of altitude gained.

- River erosion - High rainfall in uplands leads to fast-flowing rivers with significant erosive power, carving out deep V-shaped valleys.
- Glacial activity - During past periods of extreme cold, ice caps and glaciers formed in upland regions, sculpting dramatic landscapes through erosion and deposition.
The impact of landscapes on regional climate variations
While climate influences landscapes, the physical features of the UK's terrain also affect local climatic conditions. This two-way relationship means that the shape and elevation of the land can create distinct microclimates across different regions.
How landscapes modify climate
- Relief rainfall in uplands - The elevated terrain in the west forces incoming moist air to rise, leading to higher rainfall as the air cools and condenses. This contributes to the wetter conditions in these areas.
- Rain shadow effect in lowlands - As air descends on the eastern side of upland areas, it warms and holds less moisture, resulting in drier conditions in the south and east.

Human activities are mainly limited to:
- Extensive sheep rearing, taking advantage of the open land.
- Forestry, with plantations often established for timber production.
- Construction of reservoirs for water supply and hydroelectric power generation.
- Development of wind farms in recent years, capitalising on the strong winds prevalent at higher altitudes.
Human impact in lowland areas
With a more moderate climate and gentler relief, lowlands are densely populated and heavily modified by human activity.
Key features include:
- Commercial farming, which dominates rural areas with crops and livestock.
- Urbanisation, with significant areas developed into towns and cities.
- Extensive transport and service infrastructure, such as roads and railways, criss-crossing the landscape.
