1.4 - Erosion, Transportation & Deposition
The process of erosion and its main types
Erosion is the process by which materials are worn away and removed by natural forces like waves, rivers, or glaciers. This wearing away happens through several distinct mechanisms, each contributing to the shaping of landscapes over time.
Main types of erosion
- Abrasion (Corrasion) - This occurs when loose particles carried by water rub or scrape against solid rock surfaces. It can also involve particles being hurled against surfaces like river banks or sea cliffs, grinding them down.
- Hydraulic Action - This is the force of water itself, which exerts pressure on surfaces. As water rushes into cracks or cavities in rocks, it compresses air, leading to the breaking apart of rock fragments over time.
- Attrition - This involves the collision of transported rocks and boulders, causing them to break into smaller pieces. Over time, the constant knocking results in smoother, more rounded particles.
- Solution (Corrosion) - A chemical process where soluble rocks, such as limestone or chalk, are dissolved by water. The dissolved material is then carried away.
The mechanisms of transportation of sediment
Transportation refers to the movement of eroded materials from one location to another by water, whether in rivers or along coastlines. Different processes are involved depending on the size and weight of the sediment.
Key processes of transportation
- Traction - Large, heavy particles, such as boulders, roll along the bed of a river or the seabed due to the force of the water.
- Saltation - Medium-sized particles, like pebbles, move in a bouncing or hopping motion along the bed, as they are too heavy to remain suspended in the water.
- Suspension - Smaller, lighter particles, such as sand or silt, are carried within the water column, floating as they are moved along.
- Solution - Dissolved chemicals or minerals are transported within the water itself, invisible to the eye but still part of the sediment load.
The conditions and locations for deposition of material
Deposition happens when the energy of the transporting medium, such as water, decreases, and it can no longer carry the sediment. This results in the material being dropped, often in specific environments where conditions allow for settling.
Factors leading to deposition
- Reduction in energy - When the speed or force of water decreases, it loses the ability to carry sediment, leading to deposition. This often occurs in areas of low velocity.
- Common coastal locations - Deposition is frequent in sheltered areas like bays, or behind natural barriers such as spits and bars, where wave energy is reduced.
- Common river locations - In rivers, deposition often takes place near the banks, in estuaries where river and sea meet, or on the inside bends of meanders where water flow slows down.
How these processes shape coastal and river environments
Erosion, transportation, and deposition work together to continuously alter the appearance and structure of coastal and river landscapes. These processes interact dynamically, creating and modifying natural features over time.
