Human activities in rural areas often rely heavily on the goods and services provided by ecosystems, such as timber, food, and water. While these resources support livelihoods and economies, their exploitation frequently leads to negative consequences for the natural environment. Ecosystems are altered in ways that can jeopardise their health and long-term survival, affecting both biodiversity and the services they provide to humans.
The impact of different types of farming on ecosystems
Farming, driven by the global demand for food, represents one of the most significant human impacts on ecosystems. Various farming practices differ in their scale and intensity, each affecting rural environments in distinct ways.
Subsistence vs. commercial farming
- Subsistence farming - Food is grown primarily for personal use and generally has a milder impact on ecosystems unless overpopulation creates intense pressure on resources.
- Commercial farming - Focused on large-scale production for profit and often devastates entire ecosystems due to its use of advanced technologies like mechanisation, irrigation, genetically modified crops, and chemical pest control.
Arable vs. pastoral farming
- Arable farming - Involves growing crops and requires clearing natural vegetation and altering ecosystems.
- Pastoral farming - Focused on rearing livestock and also requires clearing natural vegetation and altering ecosystems.
- Land efficiency - Arable land typically supports more people per hectare than pastoral land, as crops directly feed humans while livestock farming requires more space and resources.
Intensive vs. extensive farming
- Intensive farming - Uses high levels of inputs like fertilisers and pesticides, often creating artificial environments in structures like glasshouses or poly-tunnels, which replace natural ecosystems.
- Extensive farming - Covers large areas and can degrade wide swathes of land through overgrazing or soil depletion. Examples include hill sheep farming or vast grain cultivation on prairies.
The specific consequences of deforestation in tropical rainforests
Among all global biomes, tropical rainforests suffer the most severe damage from human exploitation. These vital ecosystems, which hold immense biodiversity and play a critical role in regulating the Earth's climate, are being lost at an alarming rate due to specific human activities.
Primary causes of deforestation
- Demand for hardwood timber - The high value of tropical hardwoods drives large-scale logging, removing vast areas of forest and disrupting habitats for countless species.
- Land conversion for other uses - Forests are cleared to make way for alternative purposes, such as agriculture, mining, or urban development, completely replacing natural ecosystems with human-modified landscapes.

It is estimated that about half of the world's tropical rainforest cover has already been destroyed, representing a significant loss of biodiversity and carbon storage capacity.
