Optimum population refers to the size of population giving maximum per capita output and standard of living. As a country develops, the highest average living standards mark the optimum population.
Effects of over-population and under-population
Population size relative to available resources significantly impacts living standards and economic development. Both extremes, too many or too few people, present unique challenges.
Impacts of over-population
Over-population occurs when an increase in population or decrease in natural resources leads to a decrease in standards of living for the population as a whole. This concept is related to the carrying capacity of a country.
Challenges associated with over-population:
- Resource strain - When population exceeds the resources and technology available, it leads to shortages of food, water, and housing.
- Environmental degradation - High population density often results in overexploitation of land, deforestation, and pollution.
- Economic challenges - High numbers can cause underemployment, where individuals work less than needed for a sustainable income, and strain public services like education and healthcare.
- Social issues - Overcrowding can increase poverty levels, crime rates, and social unrest due to competition for limited resources.
Impacts of under-population
Under-population happens when a country's population is too small to develop its resources effectively. Before reaching optimum population, a country is considered under-populated.
Challenges associated with under-population:
- Resource underutilisation - Too few people in an area means resources like land and infrastructure are not used efficiently, hindering economic growth.
- Labour shortages - A small workforce can limit industrial and agricultural output, slowing development.
- Ageing population concerns - In areas with low birth rates, an ageing population can lead to a higher dependency ratio, straining economic systems as fewer workers support more retirees.

- Geographic constraints - Despite their size, these countries contain extensive regions with harsh, inhospitable terrain.
- Shifting policies - During economic uncertainty, such nations have become more selective with immigration policies.
