Desertification refers to the process where land becomes increasingly dry and loses its productivity, transforming into desert-like conditions. This degradation affects the land's ability to support vegetation, agriculture, and human habitation.
Effects of desertification on land and ecosystems
- Loss of vegetation - Plants die off or are removed, leaving the land bare and unable to sustain life.
- Soil exposure and erosion - Without plant roots to anchor it, soil is easily washed away by water or blown off by wind.
- Nutrient depletion - Soil loses essential nutrients, becoming infertile and turning into sandy, dusty, stony, or bare rock surfaces over time.
- Reduced agricultural potential - The degraded land can no longer support crops or livestock.
The causes of desertification from climate change and human activities
Desertification is driven by a combination of natural environmental changes and human-induced pressures.
Natural causes through climate change
- Reduced rainfall - In already dry areas, a decrease in precipitation limits water availability for plants, leading to their death.
- Rising global temperatures - Higher temperatures increase evaporation rates, drying out soils and making it harder for vegetation to survive.
- Impact on plant growth - The combined effect of less rain and more evaporation creates harsher conditions, preventing plants from establishing or maintaining growth.

- Stabilising sand - Planting trees helps anchor loose sand, preventing desert expansion into fertile or agricultural lands.
