Lean production is a business approach designed to enhance efficiency by minimising resource use and eliminating waste. It emphasises creating high-quality products while keeping operations as streamlined as possible.
Key aspects of lean production
- Resource minimisation - Firms aim to use the smallest amount of materials, time, and labour necessary to produce goods.
- Waste reduction - This includes cutting out unnecessary steps, excess inventory, or defective products that do not add value.
- Worker involvement - Employees are encouraged to suggest improvements to their work processes, boosting how much they can produce within a set period (productivity).
- Quality focus - The goal is to deliver reliable products without rework or errors, which saves time and materials.
Just-in-Time (JIT) stock management
Just-in-Time (JIT) is a method of stock control that forms part of lean production. It involves maintaining the lowest possible levels of inventory, ideally none at all, to reduce storage needs.
How JIT operates
In JIT, raw materials arrive exactly when required for production and are immediately turned into finished goods for dispatch to customers. Computer systems track inventory levels and automatically place orders with suppliers as soon as stocks run low. This creates a seamless flow from input to output, minimising holding times.
Just-in-Case (JIC) stock management
Just-in-Case (JIC) is an alternative stock management approach that relies on maintaining extra inventory, known as buffer stocks, at various points in the production process. This acts as a safety net against unexpected issues.
How JIC operates
Buffer stocks provide a reserve of materials or products to cover sudden increases in customer demand or disruptions in supply chains. For example, if a delivery is delayed, production can continue using the reserves without interruption.
While JIC offers protection, it requires firms to store larger quantities of items, which can lead to higher ongoing expenses.
Advantages of JIT and JIC
Both JIT and JIC have distinct benefits that influence a firm's efficiency and costs.
Advantages of JIT
- Reduces storage costs by needing less warehouse space and fewer staff.
- Minimises waste from unsold or outdated stock.
- Encourages efficient production flows.
Advantages of JIC
- Provides security against supply shortages or sudden demand spikes.
- Allows production to continue smoothly during problems.
- Enables bulk purchases for potential cost savings.
Disadvantages of JIT and JIC
Both methods also have drawbacks that must be considered when choosing a stock management approach.
Disadvantages of JIT
- Relies on precise coordination with suppliers; delays can stop production.
- Involves more frequent deliveries, increasing transport expenses.
- Misses out on bulk-buying discounts (purchasing economies of scale) due to small, regular orders.
- High risk of stockouts if there are errors or disruptions.
Disadvantages of JIC
- High storage costs for maintaining large buffer stocks.
- Risk of excess inventory becoming obsolete or tying up capital.
- Can lead to inefficiencies if stocks are not managed well.
