Economic measures of development
Economic development refers to the process by which the overall wealth and quality of life in a country improve over time, often driven by industrialization (the growth of manufacturing and related industries). Various measures help assess this development, focusing on factors like income, production, and economic structure. These indicators provide insights into a country's economic health and how evenly wealth is distributed among its people.
Key economic indicators
- Gross Domestic Product (GDP) - This measures the total value of all goods and services produced within a country's borders over a specific period, usually a year. It reflects the size and productivity of an economy. For example, a high GDP suggests strong economic activity, but it does not account for population size.
- Gross National Product (GNP) - Similar to GDP, but it includes the value of goods and services produced by a country's citizens, regardless of where they are located. This accounts for income earned abroad, providing a broader view of national economic output.
