- Assessing response rates - It provides an estimate of how many questionnaires or interviews might be completed in the full study, helping predict participation levels.

Types of data in sociological research

Collection methods and uses:
- This data is often gathered through primary methods such as questionnaires (written surveys with fixed questions) or structured interviews (formal interviews with predetermined questions).
- Secondary sources, like official government statistics on income and wealth, are also common.
- It helps examine broad trends, such as whether social inequality has increased or decreased over time. For example, statistics might show changes in wealth distribution over the past 60 years.
This type of data is valued for its objectivity and ability to generalise findings to larger populations.
Qualitative data
Qualitative data provides detailed, descriptive insights into people's experiences and views, often in written or spoken form. It emphasises depth and context rather than numbers.
Collection methods and focus:
- This includes verbatim transcripts (exact records of spoken words) from unstructured interviews, quotes from conversations during participant observation (where researchers join and observe a group), or rich descriptions from diaries and field notes.
- It explores how individuals interpret their social world, allowing research subjects to express themselves in their own words. For instance, it might capture personal stories in a naturalistic setting (an everyday environment observed without interference).
Qualitative data is particularly useful for understanding complex social meanings and achieving verstehen (a deep empathetic understanding of others' perspectives).
Respondent validation in research
Respondent validation is a technique where researchers share their findings with participants to confirm accuracy and agreement. This process helps ensure the researcher's interpretation aligns with the participants' experiences, reducing potential misunderstandings.
How respondent validation works
In this method, mainly used in interpretivist research (an approach that prioritises subjective meanings and experiences), the researcher seeks feedback from those studied. For example, they might share summaries or drafts of observations for review.
Benefits and challenges:
- Reducing bias - It minimises errors from the researcher's own views influencing the results, promoting a more balanced account.
- Challenges involved - Success depends on participants understanding the research aims. If they see the study as critical of them, they might withhold cooperation or refuse to validate the findings.
This validation strengthens the credibility of qualitative research by incorporating the voices of those involved.
Longitudinal studies in sociology
Longitudinal studies track the same group of people over an extended period, collecting data repeatedly to observe changes and long-term patterns. This approach differs from cross-sectional studies, which capture data at a single point in time. For instance, researchers might use questionnaires or structured interviews multiple times over years with the same participants.
Examples of longitudinal studies
- Office of Population Censuses and Surveys study - This follows a 1% sample of the British population identified in the 1971 Census, gathering data regularly to track societal changes.
