Theoretical issues affecting choice of research methods
Sociological research is shaped by different theoretical perspectives that influence the methods researchers choose. Two primary approaches, positivism and interpretivism, offer contrasting views on how to study society, often referred to as macrosociology and microsociology respectively.
Positivist approach and quantitative data
- Focus on external factors - Positivists believe that behaviour is shaped by external social forces, such as laws or institutions, rather than personal feelings.
- Scientific approach - They advocate for sociology to be treated as a science by focusing on measurable 'social facts'—objective elements that influence behaviour.
- Preference for quantitative data - Positivists use numerical data to identify patterns and cause-and-effect relationships, such as factors contributing to educational underachievement.
- Reliable methods - They favour structured tools like questionnaires and official statistics, which provide consistent and objective results.
Interpretivist approach and qualitative data
- Focus on individual meanings - Interpretivists, also known as interactionists, argue that understanding human behaviour requires empathy and exploring the personal meanings individuals attach to their actions.

Constraints and opportunities in research
- Time requirements - Certain methods, such as covert participant observation, demand extensive time to build trust and integrate into a group, while social surveys can be quicker to organise with shared workloads.
- Financial costs - Research expenses, including researcher salaries, travel, and equipment like computers, vary widely. Large-scale surveys, such as a national census costing hundreds of millions, are far more expensive than small focus groups.
- Researcher characteristics and skills - Personal traits or abilities can limit method choice; for instance, a female researcher might struggle to conduct participant observation in a male-only setting, while some researchers are better suited to desk-based statistical analysis than fieldwork in risky environments.

- Avoidance of deception - Researchers should be transparent about their aims and methods. However, covert studies often involve withholding the true purpose to gain access or observe natural behaviour.
- Confidentiality and privacy - Personal details and data must remain private, with participants anonymised in reports to prevent identification. Breaching this trust can deter future participation, especially in sensitive topics like crime or health.
- Avoidance of harm - Research must not cause physical or emotional distress to participants. Studies on traumatic issues, such as abuse or mental health, require careful handling to avoid re-traumatising individuals, and researchers must weigh whether to intervene in harmful situations observed during fieldwork.
Challenges with covert research
- Lack of consent - Covert methods, such as undercover participant observation, often do not obtain informed consent, as researchers hide their true intentions to blend into the group, raising ethical concerns about honesty.
- Justification for deception - Some researchers argue that covert approaches are necessary to study secretive or sensitive groups, like criminal organisations, where openness would prevent access or alter behaviour.

- Participants - The group was highly secretive due to societal taboos around homosexuality at the time, legal restrictions on public sexual activity, and personal risks like hidden identities (e.g., married men).
- Results - The study provided unique insights into hidden social behaviours that would likely have been inaccessible through overt methods, as participants would have altered their actions if aware of being studied.

Stanley Milgram's obedience experiments (1960s)

- Participants - Participants were misled about the study's true purpose (testing obedience to authority) and believed the shocks were real, while the 'victim' was pretending to react in pain.
