The concept of division of labour and its historical development
The division of labour refers to the breaking down of work into specialised tasks, where individuals focus on specific roles rather than performing a wide range of activities. This concept has evolved over time, shaping how workforces are organised across different societies and eras.
Evolution of specialised work
- Early societies - In pre-industrial times, particularly in agricultural villages, tasks were divided based on individual strengths. Craft roles like blacksmiths or cooks emerged, where workers were skilled in multiple aspects of their trade, handling various steps in a process.
- Industrial revolution - With the advent of factories, the division of labour intensified. Workers were assigned single, repetitive tasks to increase efficiency, allowing them to perform their role quickly through constant repetition.
- Historical example - In the late 18th century, economists noted factories where workers specialised in tiny components of a product, such as one group creating the main body and another finishing the edges, significantly increasing daily production rates.
Contrasting views of Marx and Durkheim on division of labour
Different sociological perspectives offer varied interpretations of how the division of labour affects workers and society. Karl Marx and Emile Durkheim, representing conflict and consensus theories respectively, provide opposing viewpoints on this organisation of work.
Marx's perspective on exploitation
- Capitalist control - Marx argued that the wealthy elite own the means of production, such as factories, forcing the working class to labour for them with little choice in the matter.
- Underpayment of labour - He believed workers are not compensated fairly for their efforts, as the rich dictate wages to maximise profit.
- Alienation of workers - The repetitive, meaningless tasks created by extreme division of labour lead to alienation, where workers feel disconnected from society and their own identity due to a lack of control over their work.
- Deskilling effect - Breaking work into small, simple tasks reduces the need for skill, further deepening workers' sense of detachment.
Durkheim's positive outlook
- Natural progression - Durkheim viewed the division of labour as a beneficial and inevitable part of societal advancement, becoming more specialised as societies develop.
- Biological analogy - He likened it to a natural law, comparing society to a living organism where each part, like the heart or lungs, has a specific function, suggesting labour should be similarly specialised.
- Social solidarity - Unlike Marx, Durkheim believed this organisation fosters interdependence among individuals, increasing mutual reliance and strengthening social bonds.
The influence of Taylor and Ford on labour organisation
In the early 20th century, key figures like Frederick Winslow Taylor and Henry Ford revolutionised industrial work by promoting extreme specialisation, significantly shaping modern labour practices.
Taylor's scientific management
- Efficiency focus - Taylor, an American engineer, advocated for 'scientific management', proposing that work should be stripped of complex decision-making for workers, assigning them simple, repetitive tasks.
- Managerial control - He suggested that planning and creative aspects of production should be handled solely by managers, leaving workers to execute predefined roles.
Ford's assembly line model
- Fordist approach - Henry Ford adopted Taylor's principles when designing car assembly lines, where each worker performed a single, small task in the production process.
- Reduced skill requirement - This model eliminated the need for workers to be skilled mechanics, focusing instead on speed and consistency in task execution.
- Criticism by Braverman - American Marxist Harry Braverman (1974) critiqued this approach, arguing that such deskilling turned workers into mere extensions of machines, diminishing their power and making them easily replaceable during disputes like strikes.
The role of technology in deskilling and reskilling workers
Advancements in technology have transformed the workplace, impacting the skills required of workers. While some argue it reduces the need for human input, others see potential for skill enhancement.
Effects of technological advancements
- Deskilling through automation - Modern machinery and information and communication technology (ICT) have replaced many manual tasks on production lines, reducing the necessity for human labour and further deskilling workers.
- Braverman's Marxist view - Braverman (1974) contended that technology exacerbates deskilling, especially in Fordist settings, and weakens workers' bargaining power since machines don't demand better conditions or wages.
- Upskilling and reskilling debate - Some sociologists suggest technology can lead to upskilling, where workers gain additional skills, or reskilling, where they learn new ones to adapt to new tools. However, this often benefits only those already highly skilled, leaving others at risk of replacement.
- Friedman's counterargument - Andrew Friedman (1977) noted that, despite technology, workers in British car factories still struck for better conditions, though their power fluctuated with economic factors like unemployment rates—stronger when unemployment was low, weaker when high.
- Piore's flexibility perspective - Michael J. Piore (1986) argued that technology, such as programmable machinery like 3D printers, necessitates a more adaptable workforce, encouraging reskilling and reducing the divide between workers and management through improved communication.
Technology's impact on managerial control over workers
Beyond altering skill levels, technology has also shifted power dynamics in workplaces, often enhancing the ability of managers to oversee and direct employees.
Shoshana Zuboff's findings on surveillance
- Study of office environments - In her 1988 research on office work, Shoshana Zuboff observed that technology was increasingly used to expand managerial control over staff.
- Automation and monitoring - She found that computers not only replaced human tasks but also enabled greater surveillance, such as through keylogging, which tracks every keystroke made by employees.
- Laws of information technology - Zuboff proposed three principles regarding technology's trajectory:
- Everything capable of automation will eventually be automated.
- All processes that can be converted into data will be turned into information.
- Any digital tool that can be used for oversight and control will inevitably be applied for those purposes.
