The purpose and use of experiments in social research
Experiments are a key method used in research to uncover cause-and-effect relationships, particularly in the natural sciences like biology and chemistry, but also adapted for social sciences. They provide a structured way to test hypotheses and generate numerical, or quantitative, primary data.
Key features of experiments in research
- Hypothesis testing - Researchers begin with a hypothesis, a proposed explanation or prediction, which the experiment is designed to test.
- Variable control - All factors are kept constant except for the independent variable, which is deliberately changed to observe its impact on the dependent variable. For instance, if studying the effect of study time on exam performance, study time is the independent variable (controlled), and exam performance is the dependent variable (measured).
- Quantitative outcomes - Results are expressed in numerical form, allowing researchers to identify patterns and establish cause-and-effect links.
Social scientists have embraced this method to explore social behaviours and interactions, adapting it to investigate societal causes and effects.
The difference between laboratory and field experiments
Experiments in social research are broadly categorised into two types: laboratory (lab) experiments and field experiments. Each type has distinct characteristics based on the environment in which they are conducted and the level of control exerted by the researcher.
Types of experiments in social research
- Laboratory experiments - Conducted in a controlled, artificial setting where the researcher manipulates the independent variable and measures its effect on the dependent variable. Often, a control group is used, which remains unaffected by changes to the independent variable, to provide a baseline for comparison. This method is commonly used in psychology.
- Field experiments - Carried out in real-world social settings, outside a controlled lab environment. Participants are frequently unaware they are part of a study, making the context more natural. This approach is often favoured by interpretivist sociologists who focus on understanding social interactions in everyday life.
Strengths and limitations of laboratory experiments
Laboratory experiments offer a high level of control, making them a popular choice in research, but they come with specific advantages and challenges that affect their applicability to real-world scenarios.
Advantages of laboratory experiments
- High control - Researchers can precisely manage variables, ensuring that changes in the dependent variable are likely due to the independent variable.
- Quantitative data - Produces numerical results that are easier to analyse statistically and identify trends.
- Replicability - The controlled setting allows the experiment to be repeated under the same conditions to verify results.
Challenges of laboratory experiments
- Artificial environment - The lab setting does not reflect real-life social situations, reducing the realism of findings.
- Variable isolation issues - Social behaviour is complex and influenced by numerous factors, making it hard to isolate a single variable for study.
- Ethical concerns - Experiments may involve manipulation or deception, raising moral questions about participant treatment.
- Participant discomfort - Individuals may feel uneasy or behave unnaturally in a lab, skewing results.

Field experiments address some of the criticisms of lab experiments by taking research into natural settings. However, they present their own set of benefits and drawbacks.

- Hidden meanings - Can reveal deeper insights into the subtleties and nuances of daily social behaviour that might be missed in a lab.
Challenges of field experiments
- Limited control - Researchers cannot manage variables as effectively as in a lab, which may affect the clarity of cause-and-effect relationships.
- Behaviour alteration - If participants become aware of the study, they might change their actions, impacting the validity of the data.
- Ethical issues - Conducting experiments without participants' knowledge raises significant ethical concerns about consent and deception.
The impact of participant awareness on experimental results
When individuals know they are being studied, their behaviour can change, affecting the reliability of experimental outcomes. This phenomenon is a critical consideration in both lab and field experiments.
Effects of participant awareness in experiments
- Hawthorne effect - Participants may put in more effort or alter their behaviour to appear favourable because they know they are being observed, potentially skewing results.
- Response bias - Individuals often guess what researchers expect and may either conform to those expectations to please them or deliberately act contrary to be uncooperative.
- Validity concerns - These behavioural changes can compromise the accuracy of the data, making it less reflective of genuine responses or actions.
- Researcher bias - Researchers' expectations can unintentionally influence how they measure or interpret results, further affecting the objectivity of the study.
