The purpose and formulation of research aims
Research aims are fundamental to any scientific investigation as they provide a clear statement of what the study intends to achieve. A research aim identifies the purpose of the investigation.
The role and structure of research questions
Research questions play a critical role in narrowing down the focus of a study. A research question asks about what a study intends to investigate.
The differences between null and alternative hypotheses
Hypotheses are specific, testable predictions made at the start of a research study. There are two main types: null and alternative hypotheses.
- Null hypothesis - Predicts no difference or no relationship between variables, suggesting any observed results are due to chance and not significant. Used as a baseline to test against; if rejected, it supports the alternative hypothesis.
- Alternative hypothesis - Predicts a difference or relationship between variables, indicating that results are significant and not due to chance. Represents the researcher's prediction or the theory being tested; aims to be supported by evidence.
The distinctions between one-tailed and two-tailed hypotheses
Hypotheses can also be classified based on the specificity of their predictions regarding the direction of the effect or relationship between variables.
Understanding one-tailed and two-tailed hypotheses
- One-tailed (directional) hypothesis - Predicts the specific nature or direction of the effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable in an experiment, or the direction of a relationship in a correlation study.
- Two-tailed (non-directional) hypothesis - Predicts that there will be an effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable in an experiment, or a relationship in a correlation study, but does not specify the direction of this effect.
