The definition and purpose of observation in psychological research
Observation is a key method in psychological research that focuses on the accurate measurement of naturally occurring behaviour. The primary goal is to watch and record behaviour in real-time, identify recurring patterns, and interpret their significance. Often, observations are carried out in natural, everyday settings where individuals are unaware they are being studied, known as naturalistic observation.
Different types of observational methods and their characteristics
Observational research encompasses various approaches, each with distinct features depending on the researcher's involvement, the setting, and the awareness of participants.
Categories of observational techniques
- Participant observation - The researcher becomes part of the group being studied, either openly (overt) with the group's knowledge or secretly (covert) without their awareness.
- Non-participant observation - The researcher remains outside the group, merely recording behaviour without engaging in the situation, and this can also be overt or covert.
- Structured (systematic) observation - Utilises a specific coding framework or chart to record predefined behaviours systematically; can be participant or non-participant, overt or covert.
- Unstructured observation - Involves noting a broad range of behaviours without a predetermined focus, capturing anything that appears relevant; can be participant or non-participant, overt or covert.
- Controlled observation - Behaviour is recorded in a setting manipulated by the researcher, which could be a lab or a natural environment; can be participant or non-participant, overt or covert.
- Overt observation - Participants are aware they are being observed; the researcher may be participant or non-participant.
- Covert observation - Participants are unaware of being observed; the researcher may be participant or non-participant.
Strengths of using observations in psychological research
Observational methods offer unique advantages in understanding human behaviour, particularly when studying actions in real-world contexts.
Advantages of observational techniques
- Revealing true behaviour - Observations often uncover discrepancies between what people claim to do and their actual actions.
- Generating hypotheses - They serve as an effective way to conduct initial research in unexplored areas, helping to formulate ideas for future studies.
- Capturing spontaneity - Observations can record unexpected or unplanned behaviours.
- High ecological validity - When conducted in natural environments, observations reflect real-life situations.
- Simplified data collection - Using pre-set coding systems can make recording specific behaviours straightforward.
Weaknesses and limitations of observational methods
Despite their benefits, observational methods come with several challenges and ethical considerations that can impact the reliability and validity of the research outcomes.
Challenges in observational research
- Observer bias - Researchers might interpret behaviours based on their own expectations.
- Reliability issues - Inconsistent or poorly constructed behaviour checklists can reduce accuracy and lower agreement between different observers (inter-rater reliability).
- Ethical dilemmas - Covert observations, where participants are unaware of being studied, raise concerns about deception and invasion of privacy.
- Participant reactivity - In overt observations, individuals might alter their behaviour due to awareness of being watched, showing demand characteristics or socially desirable actions.
- Limited insight into internal states - Observations only capture external behaviours and cannot reveal underlying thoughts or emotions of participants.
