Science involves establishing knowledge that is considered true through systematic methods. In psychology, this means using empirical approaches to gather verifiable data that demonstrate relationships between variables. These variables are factors that can change or be measured in a study.

A theory is formulated, and from this theory, researchers develop a hypothesis, which can be objectively and empirically tested against reality by manipulating variables.

Role of laboratory experiments
Laboratory experiments are a primary method for testing hypotheses in psychology because they allow clear identification of cause-and-effect relationships between variables. They use a standardised procedure to maintain control over extraneous variables. This high level of control helps ensure the findings are accurate and attributable to the manipulated variable.
Falsification in psychological science
Karl Popper (1934) argued that scientific theories cannot be definitively proven true, but they can be shown to be false. Science aims to falsify, not verify.
How falsification works in practice
In psychology, when using an inferential test and the results are found to be not significant, we fail to reject the null hypothesis, and the research hypothesis is not supported. This process relates to falsification as the research hypothesis has failed the empirical test.
Reductionism in psychological explanations
Reductionism is an approach based on the scientific assumption of parsimony, meaning that complex phenomena should be explained by the simplest underlying principles possible.

Supporters of reductionism argue that even intricate aspects of psychology, like emotions or intelligence, can be explained by basic scientific principles from fields such as biology or chemistry. For instance, a reductionist believes that the complexity of the human brain is a result of complex and interacting physical processes. If scientists research and understand these underlying chemical reactions, then they can explain intelligence, emotion, and all of the other human conditions.

Replicability refers to the ability to obtain consistent results when a study is repeated with new data collection using the same methods.
Distinguishing replicability from reproducibility
Reproducibility involves obtaining consistent results using the same data and analysis methods. Replicability is achieved when the same experiment is performed on multiple occasions with new data collection, using the same methods, and reaching the same conclusions.
Reliability in psychological studies
Reliability requires tight control over variables to establish consistency in an experiment.
To achieve reliability, psychologists exert tight control over variables:
- Use multiple repeat sample groups to avoid unusual results from a single skewed group.
- Include scientific controls to compare against experimental conditions.
If controls behave as expected, it confirms the experiment is functioning correctly, and any effects are due to the tested variable. This enhances objectivity, internal validity, and overall replicability.
Validity in psychological research
Validity assesses whether a study truly measures what it intends to and if its findings are applicable. It covers the entire research process, including how samples are randomised and controls are applied.
Types of validity
- Internal validity - Focuses on whether the study's procedures allow confident conclusions about cause and effect. It ensures results stem from the independent variable's manipulation, not uncontrolled factors like demand characteristics.
- Ecological validity - Measures how well findings apply to real-world settings. The more control psychologists exert in a study, the less ecological validity and generalisability.
- Predictive validity - Evaluates how well a measure forecasts future behaviour, determined by calculating the correlation coefficient. A stronger correlation indicates higher predictive validity; a weak one suggests low validity. For example, ability tests like GCSE exams are used to predict success in future A-level exams.

Hypothesis testing refers to whether a hypothesis can be accepted or rejected.
The cycle of hypothesis testing
