What is child psychology?
Child psychology forms part of developmental psychology, which examines changes across the human lifespan. It specifically explores the stages of infancy, childhood, and adolescence, with a strong emphasis on how early experiences shape social, emotional, and cognitive growth. This field investigates how children learn, think, interact with others, respond emotionally, form friendships, understand their own emotions, and develop personalities, temperaments, and skills.
A key focus in child psychology is the early relationship between an infant and their primary caregiver. This bond, known as attachment, influences many aspects of a child's development and serves as a foundation for future relationships.
The concept of attachment
Attachment refers to the emotional bond that develops between an infant and their caregiver, acting like an invisible connection that provides security and support. This first attachment often acts as a template for all future relationships, including friendships, romantic partnerships, and work interactions. If a child fails to form a strong, secure attachment with their primary caregiver, it can lead to difficulties in building healthy relationships later in life.
Bowlby's theory of attachment
John Bowlby, a key figure in child psychology, proposed that attachment is an instinctive survival mechanism rooted in biology. He argued that human infants are born helpless and are genetically programmed to behave in ways that elicit care from adults, ensuring their survival. This theory draws from ethology, the study of animal behaviour, to explain similarities in attachment across species.
According to Bowlby, both infants and caregivers are biologically predisposed to form attachments. Infants use species-specific behaviours to influence caregiver responses. Caregivers, in turn, are programmed to respond protectively. This mutual interaction creates the attachment bond.
Evidence from infant behaviours
- Around 6-7 months, when infants start crawling, they often show separation anxiety and stranger fear.
- These behaviours encourage the caregiver to stay close, reducing risks and aiding the infant's survival.
- As a result, attachment promotes safety, allowing the infant to grow and eventually reproduce, aligning with evolutionary principles.
Bowlby's ideas emphasise that attachment is not learned but innate, driven by genetics to enhance survival chances.
Evolutionary basis of attachment
Bowlby drew parallels between human and animal development to argue that attachment has evolved as a survival strategy. In many species, young animals stay close to parents to avoid predators and starvation, increasing their chances of survival and reproduction. This behaviour is passed on genetically through natural selection, where traits that improve survival are more likely to be inherited.
Evolutionary advantages of attachment
- Protection from threats - Staying near parents reduces vulnerability to dangers, allowing the young to mature safely.
- Species survival - Individuals with strong attachment behaviours are more likely to survive and pass on their genes.
- Human application - Human infants, being particularly helpless at birth, rely on attachment to shape caregiver behaviour, ensuring they receive food, warmth, and protection.
This evolutionary perspective explains why attachment is universal across cultures and species, as it directly contributes to the continuation of the species.
Critical period and monotropy in attachment
Bowlby identified specific elements that influence how and when attachments form, emphasising the timing and nature of early bonds.
The critical period
The critical period is a sensitive timeframe in early life during which attachment must form for healthy development. Bowlby suggested that interactions between the infant and caregiver during this period are essential for creating a secure bond.
Key features of the critical period:
- Bowlby proposed that the critical period for attachment formation extends to around two to three years; if attachments do not form during this time, healthy emotional development may be compromised.
- After this period, the ability to form primary attachments becomes increasingly difficult.
This concept underscores the importance of early, consistent caregiving.
Monotropy
Monotropy describes the idea that an infant forms one primary attachment, typically with the mother, which is stronger and qualitatively different from other bonds. Bowlby believed this primary attachment is unique and essential for mental health, comparing its importance to vitamins for physical health.
Key features of monotropy:
- Role of the mother - The attachment to the mother (or primary caregiver) is the first and most intense.
- Multiple attachments - While children can form bonds with others, these are secondary to the primary one.
- Father's role - Bowlby viewed fathers as providing indirect support, such as emotional and economic stability for the mother, rather than direct emotional bonding with the infant.
Monotropy highlights the need for a single, strong caregiver relationship to foster healthy emotional development.
Bowlby's maternal deprivation hypothesis
Bowlby's maternal deprivation hypothesis proposes that failing to form a warm, intimate, and continuous relationship with a primary caregiver (usually the mother or a substitute) can lead to long-term emotional and behavioural problems. This hypothesis focuses on the consequences of disrupted early attachments.
Key elements of the hypothesis
- Continuous relationship - The bond must be stable and uninterrupted; separations make relationships unstable and unpredictable, hindering development.
- Critical timeframe - Repeated separations before around two and a half years are likely to cause emotional disturbances, with risks continuing up to around five years. After this, children cope better with separations.
- Primary caregiver - The relationship does not have to be with the biological mother but must involve one main caregiver (aligning with monotropy) for healthy development.
