Key principles of learning theories
Learning theories explore how the environment influences and shapes behaviour, focusing only on what can be directly observed. This approach treats the mind as a 'black box' - something inaccessible and not worth studying directly. Instead, it concentrates on overt behaviours, which are actions that can be seen and measured, and the stimuli, or environmental triggers, that cause them.
A central idea is that humans are born as a tabula rasa, meaning a blank slate, with no innate knowledge or behaviours. All behaviour develops through learning and experiences from the surroundings. This emphasises nurture - the impact of external factors like family, peers, social situations, and cultural contexts - over nature, or genetic influences. As a result, learning theories highlight how these environmental elements mould individuals far more than inherited traits.
The process of classical conditioning
Classical conditioning is a type of learning where a neutral stimulus becomes associated with a stimulus that naturally triggers a response, eventually causing the neutral stimulus to elicit the same response on its own. This process was first demonstrated through experiments with animals, showing how behaviours can be learned through repeated associations.
Key terms in classical conditioning
- Unconditioned stimulus (UCS) - A stimulus that naturally and automatically triggers a response without any prior learning, such as food causing salivation in a hungry dog.
- Unconditioned response (UCR) - The automatic, natural reaction to the UCS, like salivation when food is presented.
- Conditioned stimulus (CS) - A previously neutral stimulus that, after being paired with the UCS, begins to trigger the response, for example, a bell sound that was originally unrelated to salivation.
- Conditioned response (CR) - The learned response to the CS, such as salivation triggered by the bell alone after conditioning.
Stages of classical conditioning
Classical conditioning builds progressively through distinct stages, creating a link between stimuli and responses.
The three stages are:
- Before conditioning - A neutral stimulus, like a bell, produces no relevant response. The UCS, such as food, naturally elicits the UCR, like salivation.
- During conditioning - The neutral stimulus is repeatedly presented just before or at the same time as the UCS. Over time, an association forms between them.
- After conditioning - The neutral stimulus becomes the CS and now elicits the CR on its own, without the UCS being present.
This process is most effective when the CS is presented slightly before the UCS, strengthening the association through timing.
Pavlov's research on classical conditioning
Ivan Pavlov, a Russian physiologist, conducted key experiments in the early 1900s to investigate how associations form in learning. His work with dogs provided foundational evidence for classical conditioning.
Method
Pavlov used dogs as participants and measured their salivation as an observable response. He presented food (the UCS) to the dogs, which naturally caused salivation (the UCR). At the same time, he introduced a neutral stimulus, such as the sound of a bell. This pairing was repeated over a series of trials, with the bell sounded for a brief period just before the food appeared.
Results
Initially, the bell alone produced no salivation. After conditioning, the dogs salivated to the bell by itself, almost as much as when food was present. This showed the bell had become a CS, eliciting salivation as the CR.
Conclusions
Pavlov concluded that behaviours can be learned through associations between stimuli. The conditioning relies on the CS being linked with the UCS, demonstrating how environmental cues can shape reflexive responses.
Additional features of classical conditioning
Once conditioning occurs, several processes can influence how the learned response persists, changes, or disappears. These features show that associations are not permanent and can be affected by further experiences.
Extinction
Extinction happens when the learned association weakens and eventually disappears. This occurs if the CS is repeatedly presented without the UCS. For example, if a bell (CS) is rung multiple times without food (UCS), the dog stops salivating (CR). The response fades.
Spontaneous recovery
Even after extinction, the conditioned response can reappear temporarily without further training. This is known as spontaneous recovery. For instance, if a dog that has undergone extinction is removed from the setting for a short period and then hears the bell again, it may salivate briefly. This suggests the association is not fully erased but suppressed, and can resurface under certain conditions.
Stimulus generalisation
Stimulus generalisation is when a response learned to one stimulus extends to similar stimuli. In Pavlov's experiments, dogs salivated not only to the exact bell tone (CS) but also to similar tones. The closer the similarity, the stronger the response, showing how learning can apply broadly to related environmental cues.
Discrimination
Discrimination is the ability to distinguish between the CS and other dissimilar stimuli, responding only to the specific one. If buzzers with tones increasingly different from the original CS are presented, the dog eventually stops salivating. This process refines learning, preventing responses to irrelevant stimuli.
One-trial learning
One-trial learning is a rapid form of classical conditioning where an association forms after just a single pairing of the CS and UCS. For example, witnessing a severe traffic accident (UCS) might trigger fear (UCR). Afterwards, passing the accident site (now the CS) could elicit fear (CR) without repeated exposures. This highlights how strong or traumatic events can create lasting associations quickly.
