The concept of forgetting and its causes in memory
Forgetting refers to the inability to retrieve information from memory, often interpreted in research as the information being lost. This phenomenon varies between short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM), with different reasons underlying the failure to recall.
Reasons for forgetting in short-term and long-term memory
- Limited capacity and duration in STM - Information in STM may be forgotten due to its restricted space and time limits, leading to displacement (new information pushes out old) or decay (information fades over time).
- Decay in LTM - Over time, information in LTM may fade if not revisited, making it no longer available.
- Accessibility issues in LTM - Information might still exist in LTM but be difficult to retrieve without the right prompts or triggers.
- Interference in LTM - Confusion arises when similar pieces of information overlap, making it hard to distinguish or recall specific details.
Interference theory as an explanation for forgetting
Interference theory suggests that forgetting occurs when learning similar information disrupts the ability to recall specific memories. This theory identifies two distinct types of interference that impact memory retrieval.
Types of interference affecting memory
- Retroactive interference - New information interferes with the recall of older information. For instance, learning a new phone number might make it harder to remember an old one.
- Proactive interference - Older information hinders the recall of newer information. An example is struggling to remember new vocabulary in a second language because of existing knowledge of similar words in the first language.
Cue-dependent forgetting and retrieval failure
Cue-dependent forgetting proposes that information is not truly lost from memory but becomes inaccessible without the appropriate trigger or cue. These cues can be linked to the context or emotional state during the original learning process.
How cues influence memory retrieval
- Internal cues - Personal factors like mood or emotional state at the time of learning can act as triggers. Recalling a memory might be easier if the same mood is experienced again.
- External cues - Environmental factors, such as being in the same location or situation as when the memory was formed, can aid retrieval.
- Retrieval failure - Forgetting happens when the right cue is absent, meaning the memory remains in LTM but cannot be accessed without a suitable prompt.
Key studies supporting interference and cue-dependent forgetting theories
Several significant studies provide evidence for the theories of interference and cue-dependent forgetting, demonstrating how these mechanisms operate in controlled settings.
Underwood and Postman (1960) on retroactive interference
- Method - Participants were divided into two groups. Both learned a list of word pairs (e.g., cat-tree). The experimental group then learned a second list with the same first word but a different second word (e.g., cat-dirt), while the control group did not. Both groups were tested on recalling the first list.
- Results - The control group showed better recall of the first list, indicating that the second list interfered with the experimental group's ability to remember the original pairs.
- Conclusions - This supports retroactive interference, as new learning disrupted recall of earlier information.
- Evaluation - As a lab experiment, it was highly controlled, reducing external influences. However, the artificial task of recalling word pairs may not reflect real-life memory challenges.
Underwood (1957) on proactive interference
- Method - Analysed data from memory experiments where participants learned multiple word lists. Recall of the final list was tested after 24 hours, comparing those who had learned several prior lists (15 or more) with those who had learned none.
- Results - Participants with prior lists recalled only about 20% of the final list, while those with no prior lists recalled around 80%, showing earlier learning interfered with later recall.
- Conclusions - This demonstrates proactive interference, where older information affects the ability to remember new material.
- Evaluation - The study benefits from a large data set but relies on artificial tasks, limiting its application to everyday memory situations.
Tulving and Psotka (1971) on cue-dependent forgetting in LTM
- Method - Participants were given between 1 and 6 lists of 24 words, organised into 6 categories of 4 words each (e.g., all animals, then all trees). In one condition, they attempted total free recall of all words. In another, they received category names as cues to aid recall.
- Results - In total free recall, participants with more lists showed lower recall, suggesting interference from later lists. However, with cued recall, recall rates were consistent at around 70% regardless of the number of lists.
- Conclusions - The disappearance of interference effects with cues indicates that forgetting was due to retrieval failure, not loss of information, supporting cue-dependent forgetting.
- Evaluation - The controlled lab setting minimises extraneous variables, but the artificial nature of recalling categorised words reduces ecological validity. Results may not apply to other types of information beyond word lists.
Strengths and limitations of forgetting theories
Both interference and cue-dependent forgetting theories offer valuable insights into why memories are not always accessible, but they come with specific advantages and drawbacks in explaining the phenomenon.
Interference theory
Strengths:
- Supporting evidence - Numerous controlled lab studies validate both proactive and retroactive interference, providing a robust foundation for the theory.
- Real-world relevance - Interference is observable outside lab settings, such as when learning multiple languages causes confusion between similar terms.
Limitations:
- Artificial settings - Effects are often more pronounced in lab experiments than in everyday life, suggesting the theory might overstate interference's impact.
- Lack of depth - The theory describes what happens but does not explain the cognitive or biological reasons behind interference.
Cue-dependent forgetting theory
Strengths:
- Strong evidence for LTM - It is widely regarded as the leading explanation for forgetting in LTM, with research showing most forgetting stems from retrieval failure rather than information loss.
- Contextual application - The role of cues aligns with real experiences, such as remembering events when returning to a familiar place.
Limitations:
- Artificial evidence - Much of the supporting research involves contrived tasks like word recall, which may not reflect real-world memory use.
- Scope - The theory may not apply to all memory types, such as procedural memories (e.g., riding a bike), where cues might be less relevant.
- Testing challenge - It is nearly impossible to confirm whether all information in LTM remains available, awaiting the right cue, due to the vastness of human memory.
