Learning theory and its role in attachment formation
Learning theory, also referred to as behaviourist theory, offers an explanation for how attachments develop between infants and their caregivers. This theory centres on the idea that attachment is a learned behaviour driven by the fulfilment of basic needs, such as food, through processes known as conditioning.
Mechanisms of attachment in learning theory
Classical conditioning:
- This process involves learning through associations.
- Infants naturally experience pleasure when fed.
- When the caregiver, often the mother, is consistently present during feeding, the infant begins to associate the caregiver with this pleasure, leading to attachment.
Operant conditioning:
- According to Dollard and Miller (1950), infants experience discomfort from hunger and seek to alleviate it.
- When they cry, the caregiver responds by providing food, removing the discomfort through negative reinforcement.
- Over time, the caregiver becomes linked with relief, encouraging the infant to stay close and exhibit attachment behaviours, such as distress when separated.
Evaluation of learning theory
Learning theory provides a structured explanation for attachment, but it faces criticism for oversimplifying a complex human behaviour.
Strengths of learning theory
- Scientific backing - The theory is supported by a wealth of research, particularly from controlled studies that demonstrate how conditioning can shape behaviour.
Limitations of learning theory
- Reductionist approach - It reduces the intricate nature of human attachment to basic stimulus-response mechanisms.
- Reliance on animal studies - Much of the supporting evidence comes from research on animals, which may not fully apply to human behaviour.
- Contradictory evidence - Schaffer and Emerson's (1964) study challenges the theory by showing that half of the infants in their research did not form their primary attachment with the caregiver who fed them.
- Competing theories - Alternative explanations, such as Bowlby's evolutionary theory, also have significant support.
Bowlby's monotropic theory and its key claims
John Bowlby (1951) proposed an evolutionary perspective on attachment, known as the monotropic theory. This theory suggests that attachment is an innate, biologically driven process crucial for survival, with a focus on forming a single, primary bond.
Core principles of Bowlby's monotropic theory
- Evolutionary basis for attachment - Humans have evolved a biological need to form attachments with a primary caregiver to ensure survival through protection and access to resources like food.
- Monotropy and the primary bond - Bowlby argued that infants form one special attachment, typically with the biological mother, which provides a safe base for exploring the environment and holds significant survival value.
- Internal working model - Early attachments create a mental template for future relationships, known as the internal working model. This model, shaped by interactions with the primary caregiver, influences how individuals trust and care for others later in life and can evolve based on changing relationships. This concept is linked to the continuity hypothesis, which suggests early experiences predict future relational patterns.
- Critical period for attachment - Bowlby identified the first three years of life as a critical window for attachment formation. If this bond does not develop or is disrupted during this period, it may lead to lasting social and emotional difficulties.
- Maternal deprivation hypothesis - Disruption of the bond with the primary caregiver during the critical period, through separation or loss, can have severe long-term consequences for the child's emotional and social development.
Evaluation of Bowlby's monotropic theory
Bowlby's theory has been influential in understanding attachment, but it has faced scrutiny over some of its claims.
Strengths of Bowlby's theory
- Research backing - Studies like Harlow's work with monkeys support the evolutionary need for attachment and the potential damage to social and emotional development if attachment is absent.
Limitations of Bowlby's theory
- Evidence against monotropy - Schaffer and Emerson (1964) found that many children form multiple attachments rather than a single primary bond, and often not with their mother, contradicting the idea of monotropy.
- Alternative findings from Harlow's study - Harlow's research also showed that monkeys raised without a mother but with peers did not exhibit significant social or emotional disturbances later in life, suggesting that attachments to peers can compensate for the lack of a primary caregiver.
- Mixed evidence on critical period - There is inconsistent support for the idea of a strict critical period.
- Overstated impact of deprivation - The long-term effects of disrupted or absent attachments may not be as severe as Bowlby suggested.
- Social and economic influence - Bowlby's ideas, particularly from his 1950s report, contributed to a rise in 'stay-at-home' mothering, impacting the economy as fewer women participated in the workforce during that era.
