The development of a sense of self during childhood
A sense of self is a fundamental aspect of social cognition, involving the ability to recognise oneself as distinct from others and to form a personal identity.
Stages in the development of a sense of self
- Existential self - Emerging around three months of age, infants begin to distinguish between themselves and the external world. They realise they exist as separate entities from their surroundings, a process possibly aided by the development of object permanence.
- Categorical self - By approximately two years old, children start using language to describe themselves using culturally defined categories such as age, gender (male/female), or physical traits (tall/short). Descriptions by others, such as labelling a child as 'bright' or 'mischievous', can also shape their self-esteem and self-perception.
- Identity crisis - During adolescence, as proposed by Erikson (1968), individuals experience significant body changes and begin planning for the future. This period often involves experimenting with different roles to discover a true sense of identity.
Components of a sense of self
- Distinction between self and others - Recognising oneself as separate and using appropriate language to refer to self and others.
- Personal knowledge - Awareness of one's own experiences, abilities, and motivations.

The concept of Theory of Mind and its importance
Theory of Mind (ToM) refers to the ability to understand that both oneself and others have mental states such as knowledge, feelings, beliefs, motivations, and intentions. This cognitive skill is crucial for social interactions and cooperation, enabling individuals to predict and explain behaviours based on inferred mental states.

- Understanding mental states - Recognising that others possess thoughts and emotions that may differ from one's own.
- Predicting behaviour - Using inferences about others' mental states to anticipate their actions, such as understanding that someone might act on a false belief.
- Link to social difficulties - Challenges with ToM are often associated with autism, a developmental disorder characterised by difficulties in social interaction and communication.
Development and influences on Theory of Mind
- Typical development age - Most children develop ToM by around four years of age, though some evidence suggests simpler tasks may be passed by three-year-olds, indicating an earlier onset.
- Nature vs. nurture - While ToM may have an innate basis, environmental factors such as social experiences and nurturing also play a significant role in its development.
Research on Theory of Mind using the Sally-Anne study
The Sally-Anne study, conducted by Baron-Cohen et al. (1985), is a pivotal experiment in understanding ToM, particularly highlighting differences in children with autism compared to other groups. It tests the ability to attribute false beliefs to others, a core component of ToM.
Method
- Three groups were involved: children with autism (average age 11 years), children with Down's Syndrome (average age 10 years), and typically developing children (average age 4 years).
- Two dolls, Sally with a basket and Anne with a box, were used. Children named the dolls (naming question).
- Sally hid a marble in her basket and left the room. Anne then moved the marble to her box. Upon Sally's return, children were asked where Sally would look for the marble (belief question), where the marble really was (reality question), and where it was initially placed (memory question).
- Each child was tested twice with the marble placed in different locations to ensure consistency.
Results
- Performance on control questions - All children correctly answered the naming, reality, and memory questions, indicating comprehension of the task's basic elements.
- Performance on belief question - Typically developing children scored 85%, children with Down's Syndrome scored 86%, but children with autism scored only 20%, showing a significant difficulty in attributing false beliefs.

- Differentiated and Subjective (5 to 9 years) - Children realise others have different perspectives due to access to different information, but prioritise their own viewpoint and struggle to adopt others' perspectives.
- Second-Person and Reciprocal (7 to 12 years) - Children can step into another's shoes, understanding their perspective, and recognise that others can do the same, fostering mutual understanding.
- Third-Person and Mutual (10 to 15 years) - The ability emerges to view interactions from an impartial third-person perspective, considering how an outsider might perceive a situation.
- In-Depth and Societal-Symbolic (from 14 years) - Teenagers understand that third-party perspectives can be shaped by broader social or cultural values, allowing them to consider situations from multiple angles such as moral or legal standpoints.
