Piaget's stages of cognitive development
Jean Piaget, a Swiss psychologist, proposed a theory that children's thinking, or cognition, develops through distinct stages as they grow older. He believed that all children are born with basic reflexes and senses, which form the foundation for more advanced intellectual abilities over time.
The four stages of cognitive development
- Sensorimotor stage (0-2 years)
- At this stage, a child's understanding is based solely on sensory experiences and physical actions.
- A key milestone is developing object permanence, the realisation that objects continue to exist even when out of sight, such as a toy hidden under a blanket.
- Preoperational stage (2-7 years)
- Children begin to use language and symbols but struggle with logical thinking.
- They often make errors in reasoning, such as assuming all four-legged animals are dogs.
- Characteristics include egocentrism (seeing the world only from their own perspective), irreversibility (not understanding actions can be undone), and centration (focusing on one aspect of a situation).
- They struggle with specific tasks like conservation and perspective-taking.
- Concrete operational stage (7-11 years)
- Logical thinking improves significantly.
- Children can now grasp conservation (understanding that quantity remains the same despite changes in appearance) and class inclusion (recognising that objects can belong to multiple categories, e.g., a poodle is both a dog and an animal).
- They no longer exhibit egocentrism, irreversibility, or centration but are limited to reasoning about concrete, tangible objects rather than abstract ideas.
- Formal operational stage (11+ years)
- At this stage, children develop the ability to think abstractly and use logic to solve complex problems.
- They can form hypotheses, consider theoretical principles, and handle hypothetical situations, allowing for advanced problem-solving and scientific reasoning.

Piaget introduced several fundamental ideas to explain how cognitive development occurs.
Schemas
A schema is a mental structure or framework that holds all the information a child knows about a specific object, action, or concept. For instance, a schema for a dog might include traits like having fur, barking, and wagging a tail. Schemas help children make sense of the world by providing a way to categorise and interpret experiences.
Assimilation and accommodation
- Assimilation - This occurs when children incorporate new information into existing schemas. For example, seeing a new breed of dog and fitting it into their 'dog' schema.
- Accommodation - When new information doesn't fit an existing schema, children adapt by creating a new schema or modifying an old one. For instance, learning that a cat is not a dog despite having four legs requires adjusting their understanding.
Piaget believed that cognitive development is driven by equilibration, the process of balancing assimilation and accommodation. Children strive to achieve a state of balance between their existing knowledge and new experiences, which pushes their thinking forward.
Evidence from Piaget's tasks: three mountains, conservation, and class inclusion
Piaget conducted various experiments to support his theory, demonstrating how children's abilities evolve through the stages.
The three mountains task (1956)
- Method - Piaget and Inhelder created a 3-D model of three mountains, each with distinct features like a tower or a barn. A small doll was placed on one mountain, and children were shown photographs of the model from different angles. They were asked to select the photo representing the doll's view.
- Results - Children in the preoperational stage (2-7 years) typically chose the photo matching their own perspective, not the doll's, indicating an inability to see from another's viewpoint.
- Conclusions - This task demonstrated egocentrism in young children, supporting Piaget's view that preoperational children struggle with perspective-taking.
Understanding conservation
- Method - Piaget tested conservation by presenting children with tasks involving quantity. For example, liquid was poured from a wide, short container into a narrow, tall one, or counters in two rows were rearranged so one row appeared longer. Children were asked if the amount remained the same.
- Results - Preoperational children (2-7 years) often said the tall container had more liquid or the longer row had more counters, focusing on appearance. Concrete operational children (7-11 years) correctly identified that the quantity stayed the same.
- Conclusions - This shows that logical understanding of conservation develops in the concrete operational stage.
- Alternative findings - McGarrigle and Donaldson (1974) found that if a puppet 'accidentally' rearranged the counters, even younger children recognised the number stayed the same, suggesting Piaget may have underestimated their abilities.
Understanding class inclusion
- Method - Piaget and Szeminska (1941) used a task with wooden beads (mostly brown with a few white ones) and asked children questions like, "Are there more brown beads or more white beads?" and "Are there more brown beads or more beads in total?"
- Results - Children under 7 (preoperational stage) struggled with the second question, often saying there were more brown beads than total beads. Those over 7 (concrete operational stage) answered correctly, understanding the whole category (all beads) included subclasses (brown beads).
- Conclusions - This supports Piaget's idea that class inclusion, the ability to handle multiple categories, develops in the concrete operational stage.
- Supporting evidence - McGarrigle et al. (1978) used a simpler task with toy cows (some standing, some lying down) and found similar results, confirming Piaget's findings despite criticism of the original task's complexity.
