Key factors contributing to workplace stress
- Relationships with others - Interactions with managers, colleagues, or clients can become tense, leading to feelings of being undervalued or unsupported.
- Workload and deadlines - High demands and tight schedules can create pressure, making it difficult to manage tasks effectively.
- Physical working conditions - Environments that are noisy, cramped, or have extreme temperatures can add to discomfort, alongside risks from health hazards or irregular hours.
- Role-related concerns - Uncertainty about job security, limited career progression, unclear responsibilities, or conflicting demands from different parties can heighten anxiety.
- Lack of autonomy - Limited influence over the nature or volume of work, as well as when or where tasks are completed, can contribute significantly to stress levels.

Marmot et al. (1997) study on workplace control and illness
- Method - A survey was conducted with over 7000 civil service workers in London, gathering data on employment grade, perceived control, social support, and other factors.
- Results - Follow-up medical records after five years revealed that employees in lower-grade positions, who reported less control and social support, had a higher incidence of cardiovascular issues. Those in the lowest grade were approximately four times more likely to suffer a fatal heart attack compared to the highest grade.
