The definition and scientific nature of psychology
Psychology is defined as the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. It explores the actions, motivations, and emotions of both humans and animals. While many psychological concepts may seem like common sense, they are rigorously investigated through scientific methods. This involves formulating theories and testing them systematically to understand mental processes and behaviours.
Core aspects of psychology as a science
- Theory development - Psychologists create theories to explain why certain behaviours or mental states occur.
- Scientific testing - These theories are tested through experiments to gather evidence, even if proving them definitively can be challenging.
