The concept of social cognition
Social cognition refers to the way individuals understand themselves and others, including the ability to view situations from different viewpoints.
Components of social cognition
- Self-understanding - Involves recognising one's own thoughts, emotions, and identity.
- Understanding others - Includes inferring the mental states of people around us, such as their beliefs or intentions.
- Perspective-taking - The capacity to appreciate that others may see the world differently.
Development of sense of self in childhood
A sense of self emerges gradually in early life, enabling individuals to differentiate themselves from others and form a personal identity.
Key elements of having a sense of self
- Distinguishing self from others - Using appropriate language to describe personal boundaries and relationships.
- Knowledge of personal attributes - Awareness of one's own experiences, skills, drives, and physical appearance, including body image.
Important stages in the development of self
- Existential self - Around three months of age, infants begin to separate themselves from the external world. The emergence of object permanence contributes to this.
- Categorical self - By about two years old, children use language to label themselves based on social categories like age, gender, or size. Descriptions from others can shape self-esteem during this phase.
- Identity crisis - According to Erikson (1968), adolescence involves navigating physical changes and life decisions, often leading to experimentation with various roles until a stable identity is established.
Theory of mind
Theory of mind (ToM) is the ability to attribute mental states to oneself and others, facilitating complex social behaviours.
Key aspects of theory of mind
- Understanding mental states - Recognising that people have their own knowledge, emotions, beliefs, desires, and intentions.
- Predicting behaviour - Using inferences about others' minds to anticipate actions, including awareness that people can hold incorrect beliefs.
- Links to social difficulties - Impairments in ToM are associated with challenges in autism, such as problems with communication and forming relationships.
The Sally-Anne study by Baron-Cohen et al (1985)
Baron-Cohen et al (1985) investigated theory of mind through a false belief task, comparing groups with different developmental profiles.
Method
Three groups participated: children with autism (average age 12), children with Down's syndrome (average age 11), and typically developing children (average age 4). Researchers used dolls named Sally and Anne in a scenario where Sally hides a marble in a basket before leaving. Anne then moves it to a box. Participants were asked where Sally would look for the marble upon returning (belief question).
Results
Typically developing children answered the belief question correctly 85% of the time, Down's syndrome children 86%, but children with autism only 20%.
Conclusion
The findings suggest that children with autism often exhibit 'mind-blindness', an impaired theory of mind that hinders their ability to understand or predict others' beliefs.

- Differing viewpoints - It allows individuals to step outside their own experiences and consider alternative interpretations.
- Research approach - Selman (1980) examined this through stories presenting social dilemmas, assessing how children interpret characters' perspectives.
Selman's five levels of perspective-taking
Selman (1980) outlined a stage model of perspective-taking, showing how children's abilities advance from egocentric views to more sophisticated, society-aware understanding.
The levels of perspective-taking:
- Undifferentiated and egocentric (up to about 6 years) - Children can physically distinguish self from others but not mentally, often assuming everyone thinks alike.
- Differentiated and subjective (5-9 years) - Awareness emerges that others have unique perspectives based on different information, though children prioritise their own view.
- Second-person and reciprocal (7-12 years) - Children can adopt another's viewpoint and understand that others can reciprocate this process.
- Third-person and mutual (10-15 years) - Ability to consider situations from an objective third-party stance, observing interactions impartially.
- In-depth and societal-symbolic (from about 14 years) - Perspectives are seen as shaped by broader cultural, moral, or legal contexts, enabling complex social analysis.

Studies on perspective-taking provide insights into its development and applications, though they have some constraints.
