Cognitive developmental theory and its application to gender
Cognitive developmental theory explains how children's thinking about the world evolves as they grow, with their cognitive skills becoming more sophisticated over time. This approach, originally developed by Piaget, applies to gender by suggesting that children's understanding of gender roles and identities progresses through distinct stages as their mental abilities mature.
Core principles of cognitive developmental theory

Kohlberg's theory (1966) builds on cognitive developmental ideas by outlining three sequential stages through which children develop a sense of gender constancy, the understanding that gender is a permanent trait.
The three stages of gender development
- Gender identity - Children recognise their own gender and can label others as male or female, but base this on surface-level cues like clothing or hair length. They believe gender can change easily, such as by altering appearance. This stage typically emerges around 2 to 3 years old.
- Gender stability - Children understand that their own gender remains consistent over time, but may think it can vary for others depending on the situation or context. This awareness usually develops between 4 to 6 years old.
- Gender constancy - Children realise that gender is fixed for everyone, regardless of changes in appearance or situation. At this point, they internalise their gender identity and start seeking out same-gender role models to shape their behaviour. This final stage generally occurs around age 7.
Evaluation of Kohlberg's theory
Kohlberg's theory has been supported by various studies, but it also faces criticisms for overlooking certain influences and lacking explanatory depth.
Research supporting Kohlberg's theory
- Thompson (1975) - This study compared gender awareness in young children. Results showed that 3-year-olds were far more accurate than 2-year-olds in identifying their own gender, aligning with the gender identity stage.
- Slaby and Frey (1975) - Researchers observed children's attention to gender-related stimuli. Findings indicated that children's progression matched Kohlberg's stages, with those in later stages showing greater focus on same-gender models.
- Munroe et al. (1984) - This cross-cultural investigation identified the same three stages in children from diverse societies, suggesting the theory's universality and potential biological underpinnings.
Limitations of Kohlberg's theory
- It neglects social factors, such as reinforcement through rewards or punishments, which may shape gender understanding.
- The theory describes the sequence of development but fails to explain the underlying reasons for these changes.
- Some evidence contradicts the timeline; for example, Slaby and Frey (1975) observed gender constancy in children under 6 years old.

Martin and Halverson's gender schema theory

- By around 3 years old, children establish a basic gender identity and create schemas that distinguish between their own gender (in-group) and the opposite gender (out-group).
- Through observing others, children learn behaviours, activities, and objects associated with each group, showing a preference for in-group elements.
- Schemas act as filters, helping children process and remember information that fits their gender group while ignoring or distorting out-group details.
- This can reinforce stereotypes and restrict opportunities, but as children mature, they develop a more complex understanding of gender flexibility.
Evaluation of gender schema theory
Gender schema theory is backed by studies demonstrating how schemas influence behaviour and memory, though some research challenges its assumptions about the timing and impact of gender awareness.
Research supporting gender schema theory
- Bradbard et al. (1986) - Children were presented with neutral toys labelled as for boys or girls. Results showed they played more with toys described as matching their gender, illustrating schema-driven preferences.
- Martin and Halverson (1983) - This study tested memory for gender-consistent and inconsistent information. Findings revealed that children recalled details better when they aligned with their gender schema.
Research challenging gender schema theory
- Campbell et al. (2002) - Researchers examined whether knowledge of gender stereotypes influenced actual behaviour. Results indicated no link, suggesting schemas may not directly drive stereotypical actions.
- Alexander et al. (2009) - Observations of infants aged 3-8 months showed preferences for gender-typical toys before the theory predicts gender identity forms, implying possible innate factors rather than learned schemas.
