The concept of conformity in social psychology
Social psychology examines the ways in which individuals interact with and affect one another. A key aspect is social influence, which involves alterations in behaviour to align with specific situations or the expectations of others. Conformity is a form of social influence where the actions of an individual or a smaller group are shaped by a larger or more dominant group.
Types of conformity and social influence
Conformity can manifest in different ways, depending on whether the change in behaviour is deeply accepted or superficial. Additionally, social influence can be categorised based on the motivations behind conforming.
Categories of conformity
- Internalisation - This occurs when individuals accept the majority's opinions as their own, leading to both public and private agreement. The views are genuinely internalised and become part of the person's belief system.
- Compliance - Here, individuals go along with the majority publicly to seem normal and avoid rejection, but privately disagree. This involves outward agreement without internal belief change.
Categories of social influence
- Informational social influence - People look to others for guidance on how to behave, especially in ambiguous or unfamiliar situations, assuming the group has better information.
- Normative social influence - Individuals conform to gain acceptance and avoid exclusion from the group, driven by the desire for social approval.
Key research studies on conformity
Several classic experiments have investigated conformity, highlighting how social influence operates in controlled settings.
Sherif (1935) study on the autokinetic effect
- Method - This was a laboratory experiment using a repeated measures design. Participants viewed a stationary light in a dark room, which appeared to move due to the autokinetic effect (an optical illusion). They first estimated the light's movement individually, then in groups, and finally alone again.
- Results - Solo estimates varied widely, but group discussions led to converged estimates. When retested individually, participants' estimates stayed close to the group norm.
- Conclusion - The findings demonstrate informational social influence, as participants relied on others for cues in an ambiguous situation, leading to conformity.
- Evaluation - The study had strong control over variables, enhancing reliability. However, the artificial setup reduces ecological validity, as it does not reflect real-world scenarios. The sample was all male, limiting generalisability, and deception was involved, raising ethical concerns.
Asch (1951) study on line judgement
- Method - A laboratory experiment with an independent groups design. Participants compared the length of a standard line to three others, while confederates (actors) deliberately gave incorrect answers on most trials to create majority pressure.
- Results - On average, 37% of responses conformed to the wrong majority answer, and 75% of participants conformed at least once across the trials.
- Conclusion - The experiment shows strong normative social influence, as participants conformed to avoid standing out, even when the task was clear and they knew the majority was wrong.
- Evaluation - High experimental control ensures replicability, but the task lacks real-life relevance, reducing ecological validity. Ethical issues arise from deception, which may have caused stress to participants.
Situational factors affecting conformity
Variations in the environment or group dynamics can influence the level of conformity, as shown in follow-up studies to Asch's work.
Influences on conformity levels
- Group size - Conformity increases with more people exerting pressure, but plateaus after a point. For example, with two confederates, conformity was around 14%, rising to 32% with three, but larger groups added little extra effect.
- Unanimity and social support - A unanimous majority boosts conformity, but introducing a dissenter (someone who disagrees) reduces it sharply, to about 5.5%, by breaking the group's consensus.
- Task difficulty - Conformity rises when the task is harder, as individuals feel less confident and are more likely to rely on others for guidance.
Dispositional factors affecting conformity
Personal characteristics also play a role in how likely someone is to conform, beyond situational pressures.
Personal traits influencing conformity
- Confidence and expertise - Higher confidence or relevant skills reduce conformity. For instance, Wiesenthal et al. (1976) found that feeling competent in a task lowers the tendency to follow the majority. Similarly, Perrin and Spencer (1980) showed engineering students conformed less due to their trust in their observational abilities.
- Gender differences - Research on gender is mixed. Eagly and Carli (1981) conducted a meta-analysis revealing inconsistent differences in conformity between men and women. Eagly (1987) suggested that social roles explain variations: women may conform more to maintain group harmony, while men prioritise independence and assertiveness.
