Individual differences refer to the unique characteristics that vary between people and influence whether someone develops an addiction. Not all individuals who participate in potentially addictive behaviours, such as substance use, become addicted. Key factors include social influences from peers and family, personality traits, self-efficacy beliefs, and genetic vulnerability. These elements interact to increase or decrease the risk of addiction, highlighting that addiction is not solely determined by exposure to addictive substances or activities.
Stress and its link to addiction
Stress can heighten vulnerability to addiction by activating similar brain regions involved in drug cravings. This connection suggests that stressful experiences may make individuals more responsive to drug-related cues, potentially leading to addictive behaviours.
Key research on stress and addiction: Sinha (2007)
- Method - Used brain imaging techniques to examine the relationship between stress and drug addiction.
- Results - The same brain areas were activated during stress responses as during cravings for drugs.
