Classical conditioning involves associating a neutral stimulus with a natural reflex response, leading to a learnt fear. This process can create phobias when a fear response becomes linked to a previously harmless stimulus.

- Unconditioned stimulus (UCS) - A stimulus that naturally triggers a fear response (unconditioned response — UCR).

Steps in systematic desensitisation:
- Develop a fear hierarchy, ranking situations from least to most anxiety-provoking.
- Teach relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing.
- Expose the person to the least feared situation (via imagination) while applying relaxation.
- Repeat until relaxation is achieved, then move to the next level in the hierarchy.
- Continue until the most feared situation elicits only relaxation.
Flooding
- Flooding involves immediate, intense exposure to the phobic stimulus without escape, leading to fear extinction.
- The person is directly confronted with the stimulus, either in real life or through vivid visualisation.
- They remain in the situation until anxiety peaks and subsides naturally.
- Realising no harm occurs breaks the conditioned fear response.
