Piaget's theory on object permanence
Object permanence refers to the understanding that objects continue to exist even when they are no longer visible or detectable by the senses. This concept forms a foundational aspect of cognitive development in early childhood.
Development of object permanence according to Piaget
Piaget's theory of cognitive development suggests that infants acquire object permanence during the sensorimotor stage, which spans from birth to around two years. Specifically, Piaget proposed that this understanding emerges between 8 and 12 months of age. Before this point, infants behave as if out-of-sight objects no longer exist, such as not searching for a hidden toy.
Baillargeon's violation of expectation research
Baillargeon challenged Piaget's timeline, suggesting that what Piaget observed as a lack of object permanence was actually due to infants' limited motor skills, which prevented them from physically searching for hidden objects in experiments. Instead, Baillargeon proposed that infants develop object permanence much earlier.
Methodology of violation of expectation research
Violation of expectation (VOE) research measures infants' reactions to events that either align with or contradict their understanding of the world. This approach relies on the idea that infants stare longer at novel or surprising stimuli compared to familiar ones.
How VOE studies work:
- Infants become habituated to repeated events, meaning they lose interest and look away after exposure.
- Infants are first habituated to a baseline scenario, then shown two variations: a possible event (consistent with physical laws) and an impossible event (that defies expectations).
- If infants possess object permanence, they will gaze longer at the impossible event, indicating surprise.
Baillargeon argued that infants are born with innate, basic expectations about objects, which refine through environmental interactions and help them predict event outcomes more accurately over time.
Key studies demonstrating object permanence in infants
Several studies using the VOE method have provided evidence that object permanence develops earlier than Piaget suggested. These experiments focus on infants' visual attention to impossible scenarios involving hidden objects.
Baillargeon et al (1985) - The drawbridge study
- Method - Five-month-old infants were habituated to a drawbridge rotating through 180 degrees without obstruction. Next, a box was placed in the drawbridge's path. Infants then viewed two events: a possible one where the drawbridge stopped upon contacting the box, and an impossible one where the drawbridge appeared to rotate fully, passing through the box as if it were not there.
- Results - Infants spent significantly more time looking at the impossible event compared to the possible one.
- Conclusion - The longer gaze at the impossible event suggests infants were surprised, indicating they understood the box still existed behind the drawbridge and should have blocked its movement. This supports object permanence in five-month-olds.
Baillargeon (1987) - The rolling truck study
- Method - Three-month-old infants were habituated to a truck rolling down a ramp and disappearing behind a screen before reappearing on the other side. The screen was then lifted to reveal a box placed either next to the track (not obstructing) or directly on the track (obstructing). The screen was replaced, and in both possible and impossible conditions, the truck emerged from the other side without apparent interruption.
- Results - Infants looked significantly longer at the impossible event where the box was on the track.
- Conclusion - The extended attention implies infants recognised the box's continued existence behind the screen and expected it to halt the truck. This indicates object permanence in three-month-olds.
Theoretical perspectives on infant cognitive development
Different viewpoints explain how infants acquire knowledge about objects, including object permanence. These perspectives debate the roles of innate abilities versus environmental learning.
Nativist perspective
The nativist view, supported by Baillargeon, posits that infants are born with inherent understandings of the physical world. For example, they possess basic, built-in expectations about object behaviour, which mature through experience rather than being entirely learned.
Interactionist perspective
In contrast, the interactionist view, aligned with Piaget, suggests infants start with general cognitive capacities but develop specific understandings like object permanence through hands-on experiences and interactions with their surroundings. Knowledge is constructed actively as infants explore and adapt to the world.

- Reliance on interpretation - Infants cannot verbalise thoughts, so conclusions depend on researchers' assumptions about what prolonged gazing signifies, which may not directly reflect surprise or object permanence.
- Inconsistent replications - Studies like Rivera et al (1999) found no significant difference in looking times between possible and impossible events, and some attempts to replicate Baillargeon's results have failed, questioning consistency.
