The concept of attachment
Attachment refers to a close emotional bond that develops between an infant and their caregiver. This bond is reciprocal and enduring.
Characteristics of secure attachment
- Emotional closeness - Securely attached infants demonstrate a strong desire to remain near their primary caregiver.
- Response to separation - These infants display distress when separated from their caregiver.
- Response to reunion - They show pleasure and relief upon being reunited with their caregiver.
Attachment formation in humans develops gradually and depends on the quality of care provided, rather than being an automatic process.
Lorenz's study of imprinting in geese
Konrad Lorenz (1935) explored the process of attachment in geese, demonstrating how young birds form bonds shortly after hatching.
Method
- Lorenz divided greylag goose eggs into two groups.
- One group hatched naturally with their mother, while the other was incubated artificially.
- The incubated goslings first encountered Lorenz as a moving object after hatching.
- Both groups were then mixed together to observe their behaviour.
Results
- The goslings from the natural group followed their mother, while those from the incubated group followed Lorenz.
- When released together, the goslings separated into their respective groups, each seeking their "mother" figure.
- Lorenz identified that imprinting typically occurs between 10 and 14 hours after hatching, during a critical period.
- This process is fast and automatic, but after the critical period, imprinting becomes impossible.
Conclusions
Imprinting is an innate mechanism where young birds attach to the first moving object they encounter, which they treat as a parent. This attachment influences their subsequent behaviour, such as following the object for protection.
Evaluation
- The study used precocial species (able to walk and with eyes open at birth), which differ significantly from human infants.
- While imprinting is rapid in birds, human attachment develops more slowly and relies on responsive caregiving rather than automatic processes.

Harlow's studies of attachment in rhesus monkeys
Harry Harlow conducted a series of experiments in the 1950s to investigate the factors influencing attachment in infant rhesus monkeys, focusing on the relative importance of food versus comfort.
Harlow's initial study (1959)
Method:
- Infant rhesus monkeys were isolated from their biological mothers and raised with two surrogate mothers.
- One surrogate was made of wire mesh with a feeding bottle, and another was covered in soft cloth but without food.
- The monkeys' behaviour was observed in terms of time spent with each surrogate and responses in novel situations.
Results:
- The monkeys spent the majority of their time clinging to the cloth surrogate for comfort, only briefly using the wire surrogate for feeding.
- In unfamiliar environments, they sought reassurance from the cloth surrogate.
- As adults, these monkeys exhibited social and emotional disturbances.
Conclusions:
- Attachment in infant monkeys is primarily driven by contact comfort and protection rather than solely by the provision of food.
Evaluation:
- This laboratory experiment allowed tight control over variables but raised ethical concerns, as the isolation caused long-term harm to the monkeys.
- The findings lack ecological validity, as the artificial setting does not reflect natural environments.

Harlow and Zimmerman's extension (1959)
Harlow and Zimmerman introduced a frightening stimulus, such as a large mechanical toy, to the experimental setup. Monkeys with access to a cloth surrogate clung to it for security before exploring, whereas those with only a wire surrogate displayed fear responses like freezing or erratic movement. This reinforced the idea that a comforting attachment figure is essential for building confidence and aiding exploration in infants.
Harlow and Suomi's further investigation (1970)
In this study, cloth surrogates were compared, with some providing food and others not. Monkeys showed a preference for the food-providing surrogate, indicating that nourishment can play a key role in attachment formation when combined with comfort.
Evaluation of animal studies in attachment research
Animal studies provide insights into attachment processes that would be unethical to investigate directly in humans, but they must be interpreted cautiously due to challenges in applying findings across species.
Advantages of animal studies
- Ethical alternatives - They enable research on isolation and deprivation that cannot be conducted on human infants.
- Controlled conditions - Experiments like Harlow's allow precise manipulation of variables to isolate factors such as comfort or food.
- Theoretical influence - Findings have shaped human attachment theories, such as the emphasis on emotional security, and informed policies on caregiving.
Disadvantages of animal studies
- Generalisation issues - Animals like geese (precocial) or monkeys differ from human infants in developmental needs and cognitive abilities, making direct comparisons unreliable.
- Ethical concerns - Studies often involve animal suffering without consent, raising questions about justification.
- Lack of complexity - Human attachment involves social and cultural factors absent in animal models, reducing the applicability of results.
Overall, while animal research has contributed to understanding innate and environmental influences on attachment, it should complement rather than replace human-focused studies.
