Introduction to social learning theory
Social learning theory builds upon behaviourist ideas by suggesting that people acquire behaviours not only through direct conditioning but also by observing and copying others. This approach was pioneered by Bandura during the 1960s. It recognises that cognitive elements, known as mediational processes, play a key role in bridging the gap between an external stimulus and a person's response. These processes involve paying attention to, perceiving, and remembering the actions demonstrated by others.
Processes involved in learning behaviour
Behaviours can be learned through direct observation and imitation of role models, with certain factors influencing whether imitation occurs. Role models are often individuals who hold significance for the observer, such as teachers, celebrities, or peers.
Key processes in social learning:
- Modelling - Involves watching someone else's behaviour and then replicating it.
- Identification - Occurs when the observer relates to the model, adopting their appealing traits or qualities.
- Reinforcement - Positive reinforcement makes repetition of the behaviour more likely, while negative reinforcement discourages it.
- Vicarious reinforcement - Happens when the observer sees the model receiving a reward or punishment, which affects their decision to imitate the behaviour.
Mediational processes required for learning
Mediational processes are the cognitive steps that determine whether observed behaviour is learned and later performed. These steps ensure that learning is not just automatic but involves mental evaluation.
The four mediational processes:
- Attention - The observer must notice and focus on the model's behaviour for learning to begin.
- Retention - The behaviour must be remembered or encoded in memory to be recalled later.
- Reproduction - The observer assesses their own ability to perform the behaviour; if they believe they can do it, they are more likely to try.
- Motivation - The observer weighs up the potential consequences; if positive outcomes are expected, imitation is more probable.
For instance, someone might watch a skilled musician but avoid attempting to copy them if they doubt their own coordination or anticipate failure.
Bandura's research on imitation of aggression
Bandura and colleagues conducted a study in 1961 to investigate how children imitate aggressive behaviours observed in adults.
Method
The experiment used a matched participants design with a group of 60 children (30 boys and 30 girls, average age around 4 years). Participants were divided into three conditions: one observed adults acting aggressively towards a Bobo doll, another saw non-aggressive play with toys, and a control group had no exposure to models.
Results
Children who saw aggressive models displayed more aggressive actions towards the Bobo doll compared to the other groups. Those in the non-aggressive and control conditions showed little aggression.
Conclusions
The findings indicate that aggressive behaviours can be acquired through observing and imitating others who display aggression.
Evaluation
This research supports social learning theory by demonstrating imitation in a controlled setting, with high reliability due to standardised procedures. However, the artificial laboratory environment reduces ecological validity, as it may not reflect real-world situations. The sample was limited, restricting generalisability, and there are ethical issues around exposing children to aggression, which could have lasting effects.
Key points and evaluation of social learning theory
Social learning theory highlights that learning can occur without direct reinforcement, as mere observation suffices, though seeing rewards can encourage imitation. It aligns with the nurture perspective in the nature-nurture debate, emphasising environmental influences like media violence on behaviour, but overlooks genetic factors.
However there are challenges in confirming observational learning, because behaviours may appear long after initial observation, making it hard to link them directly to a specific model.
Overall, the theory explains social influences on behaviour effectively but may undervalue biological elements.
