- Dependency ratio - The proportion of the population that relies on the working-age group (aged 15-64) for support. This includes young people (aged 0-14) and older individuals (aged 65 and over).
The stages of the demographic transition model (DTM)
The demographic transition model (DTM) illustrates how populations evolve over time through distinct stages, reflecting changes in birth and death rates as societies develop economically and socially. This model typically includes five stages, each with unique characteristics.
Stage 1: High birth and death rates
- Population stability - Both birth and death rates are high, often around 35 per 1000, leading to a stable but small population.
- Reasons for high birth rates - Lack of access to birth control, limited education, and high infant mortality necessitating larger families.
- Reasons for high death rates - Inadequate healthcare, poor sanitation, and insufficient nutrition contributing to diseases and low life expectancy.
Stage 2: High birth rate with falling death rate
- Population growth - Death rates drop to around 15 per 1000 due to improvements, while birth rates remain high at about 35 per 1000, causing rapid population increase.
- Reasons for sustained birth rates - Continued absence of family planning, limited education, and reliance on children for labour in agricultural settings.
- Reasons for declining death rates - Advances in medical care, better sanitation, and improved diets reducing mortality.
Stage 3: Falling birth and death rates
- Slower growth - Birth rates decrease significantly to around 13 per 1000, while death rates fall more gradually to about 10 per 1000, resulting in slower population growth.
- Reasons for declining birth rates - Greater access to contraception, improved education, economic shifts towards manufacturing, and increased female participation in the workforce.
Stage 4: Low birth and death rates
- Population stability - Both birth and death rates stabilise at low levels, around 10 per 1000, leading to a large but stable population.
- Reasons for low birth rates - Rising costs of child-rearing, preference for luxury goods over large families, and reduced economic benefits of having many children.
Stage 5: Birth rate below death rate

- External disruptions - Factors such as conflict or widespread disease can interrupt the predictable progression through the stages.

Population change is not solely determined by economic or health factors; cultural and societal influences also play a significant role in shaping birth and fertility rates.
Societal influences on population dynamics
- Role of women - In societies where women have access to education and employment, family formation is often delayed, leading to lower fertility rates, particularly in more developed regions.
- Attitudes towards marriage - Cultures that encourage early marriage tend to have higher fertility rates, sometimes exceeding 6 children per woman in such societies.
- Religious beliefs - Religious perspectives on contraception and abortion can influence fertility, with higher rates often observed in areas dominated by faiths that discourage birth control.

Population structure and the demographic dividend
Population structure refers to the composition of a population in terms of age and gender, which evolves as societies progress through the stages of the DTM. This structure has significant implications for economic potential, particularly through the concept of the demographic dividend.

Population structure is the distribution of males and females across different age groups within a population.
Population pyramids:
- These are graphical representations that illustrate population structure.
- The top shows life expectancy, often with more elderly women than men.
- The sides compare gender ratios.
- A wide base indicates high birth rates, while a narrow base suggests low birth rates.
- Bulges or narrows reflect historical events affecting birth or death rates.

The demographic dividend

A fall in death rates before birth rates creates a youth bulge; as these young individuals enter the workforce, there is a large working population with fewer dependents.
