- Global variation - Biodiversity is not uniform across the planet. It tends to increase from the polar regions towards the equator, with tropical rainforests hosting around half of the world's plant and animal species due to their warm, wet, and stable climate.
- Climate influence - Near the equator, the consistent warmth and moisture create ideal conditions for plant growth, which in turn supports a greater number of species further up the food chain.
- Local differences - On a smaller scale, biodiversity varies significantly. For instance, cultivated agricultural fields often have much lower biodiversity compared to untouched natural environments.

To understand how biodiversity changes over time, scientists use specific tools and indices to track species diversity and population trends across the globe.

- Species richness - This is a count of the total number of different species in a given area. However, it does not consider the population size of each species.
