Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel GCSE Physics past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper questions early, even topic by topic as you work through the content, is one of the most effective ways to build confidence for Pearson Edexcel GCSE Physics Higher. Our by-topic view makes it straightforward to pull questions on, say, Radioactivity or Electricity and circuits right after studying that topic, so you're testing yourself while the material is fresh.

As mock season approaches, we'd suggest moving to fuller practice papers to get comfortable managing the full 1 hour 45 minutes across each paper's range of topics. Then in the final few weeks before your May/June exams, saving two or three complete papers will help you consolidate everything and identify any remaining gaps.

That rhythm of topic questions throughout the year and full papers in the final stretch is where spaced retrieval really pays off.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

The honest answer is that there's no single number that suits every student. The underlying principle is to use past papers as a genuine check on what you know, rather than a first pass at learning the material.

Each 1PH0 sitting involves two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes each, so full timed attempts are a significant time commitment and work best once you've already covered the content. We'd suggest starting with our by-topic exam practice to build confidence across all 15 topics before moving on to full papers. As your exam date gets closer, working through as many complete past papers as you can find helps you build stamina and spot the question styles Edexcel returns to regularly. Spreading your papers out using spaced retrieval, rather than cramming them all into one weekend, tends to produce much stronger results.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Practising with the clock running is one of the most effective ways to build exam confidence, because each of the two 1PH0 papers gives you 1 hour 45 minutes to answer 100 marks' worth of questions, and pacing yourself across that time is a real skill in itself.

We'd suggest starting with individual topics in our exam practice tool first, then moving to full papers once you feel comfortable with the content. That progression helps the knowledge stick before you put yourself under time pressure.

Pre-testing (attempting questions before you feel fully ready) is an evidence-based technique that primes your brain to absorb feedback from the mark scheme more deeply, so even if a timed run doesn't go well, carefully reviewing where you dropped marks is where a lot of the learning happens.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

Getting a low score on a past paper feels disheartening, but it's genuinely one of the most useful things that can happen before your actual exam. We'd suggest going through the mark scheme question by question and categorising your mistakes: was it a topic you hadn't revised, a calculation error, or an AO2/AO3 question where you needed to apply knowledge or evaluate evidence rather than simply recall a fact?

Once you've spotted the pattern, our by-topic view makes it easy to go back to exactly the areas that let you down, whether that's Motion and Forces on Paper 1 or Electricity and Circuits on Paper 2. Our notes and flashcards are great for rebuilding the knowledge base, and spaced retrieval (returning to those weak topics over several sessions rather than cramming them once) really helps the content stick. After revisiting the material, working through more of our exam practice on those specific topics gives you a much cleaner read on your progress.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

When working through the Edexcel mark scheme, it helps to treat different question types separately, since each paper includes a mix of multiple-choice, short answer, calculations and extended open-response questions.

For short answer and calculation questions, compare your response point by point with the mark scheme, reading each criterion carefully before awarding yourself a mark.

Extended open-response questions use levels-of-response marking, where your answer is assessed holistically against banded descriptors rather than individual bullet points, so read the full descriptor for the band you think you reached and honestly check whether anything from a higher band applies to your answer.

Edexcel's examWizard tool includes mark schemes and examiners' reports alongside past questions, which can help you understand what markers were looking for on each question type.

After marking, our by-topic view makes it easy to spot which topics are costing you the most marks, so you can focus your revision where it will make the biggest difference.

Question 6

How does Cognito group Pearson Edexcel past-paper questions by topic?

Accepted Answer

Our by-topic view sorts past-paper questions from across the exam series into Edexcel's 15 topics, so you can focus on one area at a time rather than working through a full paper every session. We'd suggest three moments where it works especially well:

- **Just before an end-of-unit test**, when you want questions matched to exactly what you've just studied, so you can check your understanding straight away.
- **When mock results flag a weak area**, so you can pull together every available past question on that topic in one place and work through them methodically.
- **During topic-by-topic revision in the final run-up to the exam**, when being strategic about where to spend your time makes a real difference across all 15 topics.
