Question 1

How do I get full marks on a 6-mark question in OCR GCSE Biology?

Accepted Answer

6-mark questions on OCR GCSE Biology are usually **levels-of-response** questions, which means the examiner awards marks by reading your whole answer and deciding which level it fits into. Your job is to show enough depth, detail and logical flow to hit Level 3.

**What level 3 looks like:**

Level 3 (the top level) typically awards 5–6 marks. You'll need a detailed, coherent answer that covers multiple linked points, uses correct scientific terminology, and shows clear reasoning. Level 2 (3–4 marks) might have the right ideas but lack detail or structure. Level 1 (1–2 marks) is brief or muddled.

**Build your answer like this:**

Start by identifying what the question is asking, often these questions want you to explain a process, compare two things, or evaluate evidence.

Question 2

What do the levels in a Biology mark scheme mean?

Accepted Answer

Levels in a Biology mark scheme tell you **how much detail and quality** the examiner expects in your extended-response answer. They're used for questions worth 4–6 marks where you need to explain or evaluate something in depth.

**How it works:**

OCR groups answers into **level descriptors** (usually Level 0, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3). Each level describes the quality of the response, not just whether you got the facts right, but how well you've communicated and linked ideas. A Level 3 answer demonstrates clear scientific reasoning, uses appropriate terminology, and connects multiple points logically. A Level 1 answer might include correct isolated facts but lacks coherence or depth.

**What examiners look for:**

At the top level, they want to see that you've answered the question fully, structured your points in a logical order, and used Biology terminology accurately.

Question 3

What's the difference between Cognito's exam practice and past papers?

Accepted Answer

Our exam practice is designed to help you **learn** while you answer, not just test whether you already know the content.

**What makes our questions different:**

Every question in our exam practice comes with a full written explanation (not just the answer) plus a link to the relevant Cognito note or video. So if you get something wrong, you can understand why, then go straight to the content to fill the gap. That's hugely valuable when you're still building your knowledge.

Past papers are brilliant for **timed practice** once you've already revised the content, but they don't teach you anything new. The mark schemes are dense and often assume you already understand the science. They're a diagnostic tool, not a learning tool.

Question 4

How long should I spend on each question in the exam?

Accepted Answer

A sensible rule of thumb is to spend roughly **one minute per mark**. That gives you around **1 hour 30 minutes** to work through the 90 marks on each paper, leaving **15 minutes** at the end to check your work and fill in any blanks.

In practice, shorter 1- or 2-mark questions will take less time (30 seconds to a minute), while longer 6-mark extended-response questions need closer to 8–10 minutes once you've planned your answer. Don't get stuck on a single question. If you're spending more than twice the mark allocation (e.g. 6+ minutes on a 3-marker), move on and come back to it in your checking time.

**In the Depth paper (Paper 4),** you'll find more extended-response questions that require synoptic reasoning across a chapter. These naturally take longer to plan and write, so they're worth the extra minutes.
