Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel GCSE Biology past papers?

Accepted Answer

We'd suggest starting with **topic-by-topic past-paper questions** as soon as you've covered each topic in class, then saving full timed papers for your final few weeks of revision.

**Throughout the year:** Use our exam practice to work through questions on each topic straight after you've learned it. That way, you're applying the content while it's still fresh, which helps it stick. You can filter by topic and paper (Biology 1 or Biology 2) to target exactly what you need.

**After mocks:** Once you've sat your mock exams, use them as a diagnostic. Go back through the questions you dropped marks on, revise those topics using our notes and flashcards, then practise similar questions until you're confident.

**Final 4–6 weeks:** This is when full timed papers become really valuable.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There isn't a magic number, but we'd suggest aiming for **at least one full past paper for each Biology paper** (Paper 1 and Paper 2) under timed conditions, then working through as many additional papers as you can fit into your revision schedule.

**Why one of each minimum:**

Each Biology paper covers different topics. Paper 1 examines Topics 1–5, while Paper 2 examines Topics 1, 6 and 7. Doing at least one of each helps you get familiar with how each paper is structured and what question styles come up for each topic cluster.

**Why more is better:**

Past papers show you the question types, command words, and level of detail examiners expect. The more you do, the more patterns you'll spot (how 6-mark questions are structured, how practical questions are phrased, what makes a strong extended answer). That pattern recognition builds confidence and helps you answer more efficiently under exam pressure.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Timed practice is one of the most effective ways to prepare for your GCSE exams. We'd suggest building up to it gradually, though.

Start by working through past papers without the clock, focus on understanding the question types, practising your explanations, and getting familiar with how Edexcel phrases things. Once you're comfortable with the content, add the timer. Each Biology paper is 1 hour 10 minutes for 60 marks, so you've got just over a minute per mark. That sounds generous, but longer questions eat up time quickly, so pacing matters.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

Getting a low mark on a past paper can feel disheartening, but it's one of the most useful moments in your revision. You've just identified exactly where you need to focus next.

First, go through the paper with the mark scheme open and work out where you lost marks. Were they knowledge gaps (forgetting mitosis phases, not knowing enzyme definitions)? Application mistakes (misreading a graph, misapplying a genetic cross)? Or exam technique issues (not writing enough for the marks available, missing command words like "explain" vs "describe")? Group your mistakes into patterns rather than treating each one as a one-off.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Pearson publishes a detailed mark scheme alongside every past paper, you'll find it on their website or exam-practice platforms. Here's how to use it effectively:

**Get the right mark scheme**

Make sure you download the mark scheme that matches your paper code (1SC0/1BH for Biology 1 Higher, 1SC0/2BH for Biology 2 Higher). The Foundation mark schemes won't match your paper.

**Mark question by question**

Work through your answers one question at a time.

Question 6

How does Cognito group Pearson Edexcel past-paper questions by topic?

Accepted Answer

We group every past-paper question by the spec topic it tests, so you can target exactly the areas you need to practise.

Our **by-topic view** sits inside the Past Papers tool. When you open any Edexcel GCSE Combined Science Biology paper, you'll see the full paper (so you can work through it in order if you prefer), but you can also filter to show only questions from a particular topic, say, Topic 3 (Genetics) or Topic 7 (Animal coordination, control and homeostasis). That way, you can drill down into weak spots without working through entire papers.

**Three good moments to use it:**

- **Just before an end-of-unit test**, pull up the topic your school is testing next week and work through every past question on it.
- **When mocks flag a weak area**, if your mock shows you struggled with Topic 2 (Cells and control), filter to that topic and practise every question from the last few exam series.
- **During topic-by-topic revision in the run-up to the exam**, systematically tick off topics one at a time, using the by-topic view to make sure you've seen every question type the board has asked.
